What to do when you’re stuck on an exam exercise?

Hi.

Which tactic should I try if I am stuck on an exam exercise?

Take a certain amount of time thinking about it, then move on and come back. The amount of time you think about it should be reasonable for the length (time) of the exam. If you are still stuck put something down that would make the professor think you know what’s going on, and depending on the grader, you may get partial credit.

I usually read the question, and if I have no idea, I move on. You should make you sure you can answer every question that you know before you spend a lot of time on questions that you don’t know. If it’s a question that I think I could figure out in a little bit, I usually save it for later so I can at least finish the rest of the exam.

When you go back to it, try to figure it out, but don’t leave it blank. You could very well get partial credit for starting the solution, even if you don’t finish it.
