What to do, Where to Apply?

Im at the point in highschool where im suppose to figure out which college i want to go to. Im very interested in going to college but with my grades i don’t really know what my chances are of getting into a good college.

English:
My average for english is 75.83, My freshman and sophomore year the teacher i had was one of those teachers that doesn’t grade you base on your work when it was time to put your grade in the system I imagine he just thought of a number there was no calculating. Whenever i talked to him about why my grades were that low he always said i didnt follow rules thats true but i dont see why it would affect my grade to that point. I always passed his test and i always do my hw. My junior year i improve getting a 85 and my senior year as of now going to the end of the first semester its a 93.

Social Studies:
I have an average of 78.33 I had a teacher for 3 semesters gaining 75 for 2 of them and 85 the other my junior year

Math:
My grades in math were actually not that bad, in algebra for freshman year i got a 70 for 1 semester and 80 for the other. In geometry i got 85 for 1 semester and 75 for the other. In trig junior year i failed trig getting a 55. Leaving my average for all the semesters as 70. Right now in my senior year i have an 85 in trig and may get over a 90 for the semester. Plus i talked to the teacher and she accepted to write me a recommendation.

Sciences:
I received an 82.69 average

Foreign Language:
I passed 2 semesters with one teacher for the other 2 semesters i received a 55 from a different teacher. I went to a school where majority of the people spoke spanish as far as i know only them passed her class. She always had an attitude and multiple complains from students to principals. My average for Foreign Language for all semesters is 62.50

The Arts:
This consist of art class and band class.
My average is 79.38, I failed band twice with average of 55 for 2 semesters in sophomore year but my junior year i received a 85.

Health/Physical EDU
83.53 average received a 95 in health for junior year.

My cumulative average is 76.48% which is terrible, I’ve improved receiving no grade lower than a 85 for any class except trig in my junior year. And have started off my senior year strong as well.

Im a proficient web developer/designer and I make good money creating websites and designing for people. I worked with a guy thats a CEO of a publicity company and vice president of a record label that worked with UMG, Sony, and other labels. He wrote me a great recommendation letter.

Im also receiving a recommendation for creating a crowd funding donating and collecting website for a non profit company in Australia.

Im currently working on a site that helps student study for exams, and a site for any student to start there own scholarship get it funded then have money sent to financial aid or a tax free student savings.

Im receiving recommendation letters from guidance counselor, trig teacher, maybe english teacher, maybe global teacher, maybe biotech teacher, 2 guys I did work for, and aunt that graduated from RPI and went to Stanford for MBA.

My questions is can i get into a good university if so what are some??, I did bad my freshman and sophomore years but i have improved a lot my junior year and I’m continuing to improve as well in my senior year. I want to go to college for Business Administration and Computer Science.

My SAT i took for the first time Nov 2nd and will receive scores in 16 dyas.

Salem State University in Salem MA is a really good school, and with your averages and scores it is about in your range. Some other schools I know of in your range that are good are Keene State (NH), Framingham State (MA), and Franklin Pierce (MA).

I’m from Mass myself, so I couldn’t name any schools closer to you; I don’t know how far you want to travel either.

University of Hartford is about your range maybe a little reach, but they have what you’re looking for and are very good at it.

Thanks im open to being on the east cost, Maybe upto 15 hours away from New York

Wherever you apply, never, never, never complain about your teachers as the source of your grades. You can safely do that here, though we aren’t necessarily sympathetic, but colleges really don’t want to hear about it. What they want you to say is I take responsibility, I’ve grown up, I’ve learned my lesson, and I’m a much better student now.

Good luck.

Thanks i know ive heard that before.

What is your home state? What can your family afford?

Home State: NY

Parents cant afford much since my brother is in RPI so they will have to handle that and me but im open to just getting a loan. Plus i make good money making websites like 3k in 1 week so not really worried about money.

You need to ask your parents how much they’ll pay for each child. I’m guessing that they’re not going to pay for your brother’s cost and then say, “oops, nothing for you.”

You can only borrow the following amounts:

$5500 frosh
$6500 soph
$7500 jr
$7500 sr

That’s not much. Not nearly enough to pay for college.

However, if you can truly earn a couple thousand per week, then you could fund your own college costs. however, if your income is sporadic, then that’s doubtful.

If you can pull down $3000/wk doing websites, is college really a good idea? Not only do you have the expense of college, you are giving up $600k in income over 4 years, not to mention a four year leap in experience over everyone else.

If you actually are earning $3,000 per week consistently (that is $150,000 per year before income taxes), then keep working.

Consider attending a local inexpensive college (e.g. a community college) part time, perhaps one or two classes at a time, while you are still earning good money. Do so to complete the frosh/soph level courses needed to transfer to a good four year school for your intended major (e.g. Stony Brook for CS). You should be able to save up considerable amounts of money for college and other costs while making progress toward transferring to a four year school.

If the earnings dry up, switch to being a full time student, complete your frosh/soph work as soon as possible, then transfer to a four year school to complete your bachelor’s degree. If you reach transfer readiness while the work earnings are still good, you can revisit the decision of whether to transfer to a four year school or keep working then. But even then, the introductory CS courses that you will have completed by then may be helpful to you in your web design work.

If you have local four year schools that are inexpensive and allow part time attendance while offering good bachelor’s degree programs in your major, then you may not have to worry about transferring, and may be able to complete your entire bachelor’s degree part time as long as the earnings from your work are still good.

In other words, a non-traditional route may be a good route to consider if you want to earn a bachelor’s degree.
