What to do with old curtains

Any good ideas other than trash can or fabric recycling bin? Floor length, in good shape.

When I was a little girl, my aunt replaced some curtains and let my sister and me use the old ones for costumes. She let us cut them up and dye them in the sink with Rit dye, and after they dried, they became gowns or robes or whatever other exotic things we could think of, and we used them for dress-up every time we came to her house for about a year.

This comment has no practical value, but thanks for reminding me about it. Good memories.

Perhaps donate? I’m used to make costumes out of old sheets, but I suspect you keep DD’s are past that age.

Donate to goodwill or equivalent.

Paint drop cloths. Picnic “blanket”.

if you have any friends that sew, they may want to repurpose the fabric. You can offer them on freecycle.

I bought curtains at a yard sale because I liked the fabric. I cut them up and used that fabric for a number of projects.

If they aren’t faded…donate them someplace.

If they are custom made with traverse type rod or faded…really…just give them away or trash.

I work in a charity thrift store…and these curtains do not sell if the fabric is faded in the least. Also, folks aren’t looking for the old Waverly floral prints…or big stripes.

Lol, @STEM2017. Don’t forget Scarlett O’Hara either. https://www.pinterest.com/caholmes67/carol-burnett-went-with-the-wind/

Donate to a HS theater. Good for stage props.

Where? It doesn’t look like many charities are accepting them. Probably what @thumper1 said, not the most popular item. I’ll throw away.

Make them into dresses like Maria. (sound of music)

Who will wear it? It looks like I am the only one going for old Waverly patterns. And I am not wearing it.

@Iglooo Just joking.

I was thinking more along the lines of Gone With The Wind, but be sure to take the curtain rod out! :slight_smile:

I would give them to the Goodwill or Salvation Army, if they are in good shape. People buy old curtains from them all the time.

Folks who go to Burning Man love them if there are enough panels to make a canopy for shade.

Maybe animal shelter would want them for animal bedding or washing the animals–call and ask.

@Iglooo

Are these pinch pleat draperies? Faded? Floral? Stripes?

Donate to goodwill. They will take them and try to sell them.

@dietz199 please…I’ve been an assistant director of HS plays. Our school, and many others do NOT have space to store items like this…at all. If you want to donate to a HS, please call them first…and don’t be surprised if they say…thank you…but we can’t use those.
