Got an email that said it has a recording of me watching porn. Unless I pay $1,900 within 24 hours, they will do something or other. I didn’t read the details. They can do whatever they want to do. Unless I am more forgetful than I think I am, I have no recollection of watching porn. And I have no idea how they have a recording of me doing any thing. The camera on my computer is taped over. What should be my next step? Is deleting the email sufficient? Report phishing? Anything else?
I put all my spam email in my junk folder. I receive more after being on an unsecured wifi, such as at a hotel or doctor’s office. After diligently putting all spam in junk folder, I get rid of them.
They do not have a recording of you. They are hoping you will panic and send them the money, but you’re too smart for them.
This is a completely fake email. Just delete it and don’t worry. They do not have a recording of you.
Should you report it phishing? It doesn’t seem to be doing any good. I get spam mail but this is the first blackmail, pay me or else…
I know they don’t. If they do, it won’t be exciting to watch me watch porn. I am probably falling asleep on it.
I had that email, except I was told I had to pay $500 in Bitcoin. Obviously price gouging is being practiced by hackers, haha.
I did nothing in terms of the email itself, other than deleting it. The email I got threatened to send everyone in my contacts list a “video” of me watching porn if I didn’t pay. I did email all of my regular contacts and tell them to not open/delete anything from me that had any attachment or link. I didn’t email my whole list. If some random person I never email suddenly got an email with a link or attachment from me, I would assume they wouldn’t look at it.
Ignore it.
@Lindagaf How did you do it? Do they send your contact with malware link making it look like coming from you?
Delete it.
You may also want to block the sender, if your email will allow that. Even if you delete this email, it’s likely-unfortunately-you’ll get more.
Do not click on anything in the email under any circumstances.
@Iglooo , I don’t know. If they did actually send anyone anything, none of them ever told me about it. This was about six months ago.
I paid 'em. Better safe than sorry.
It’s a mass email that’s sent to millions of people and they know they’ll get a few dumb suckers who were watching porn recently who will respond.
I would bet that in a year or two, when you’ve gotten several similar emails, you won’t think twice about it when you push the delete button.
Block the sender, delete the email, and move on. Don’t click anything.
If I reported all the phishing emails I get every day, I wouldn’t have time to do anything else!
I got one of those same emails. And they even had access to a user name I’d used on some merchant’s online account. The letter was basically “We know you use this name and I’ll get right to the point. We have proof you watch porn.”, along with a demand for money.
I deleted it and didn’t look back. No repercussions. They send out a whole bunch of these knowing most people won’t fall for it but if even a few do, it’s worth their time.
And if you reply to it, they know they have a valid email address. Just don’t.
Of course, I don’t reply. I am wondering if deleting and reporting phishing is enough. Should I also warn my contacts that a malware may be coming their way? Shall I shut down this account, etc.?
@NJres LOL
@calla1 Yup, the same email. It started out just like that.
Reporting doesn’t take any longer than deleting. You click on report instead of delete. If you report, they delete it.
