I’m a english major right now, pondering law school (as well as a billion other things). My school offers several concentrations within the English department and right now I’m considering either Professional Writing and Rhetoric, Creative Writing, and Technical Writing. Which would help me develop the analytical skills needed to pursue law?

Since you are thinking of law school among a billion oher things, dont let that influence your choice among these subjects.

However, if you are thinking of becoming a lawyer, one of the most essential parts of that field is the ability to communicate your ideas effectively to others - which could include clients, judges and other lawyers. Wthout that, the best analysis is useless.

The ability to perform technical writing could be very useful since it requires an ability to explain complicated things to othes - for instance, to write instructional manuals. If you like technical writing, it is also a very well-paying profession since good technical writers are not common. It doesn’t pay as well as some legal jobs, but it does pay more than some others. And it doesn’t require the expenditure of extensive time and money to attend law school.

You could even work for a while as a technical writer while deciding whether to go to law school.

I don’t know what is meant by “professional writing and rhetoric”. Perhaps it refers to writing essays or some aspect of journalism. If so, it also could help you learn to communicate your ideas better. Creative writng could also help, but not necessarily as much.

But don’t spend your time in one of these concentrations just because of law school; do it because you find it interesting. Otherwise you will have some very difficult times psychologically.
