What to major in if you want to be a radio talk show host?

Is communications ideal? Or can it be any major…

communications or broadcast journalism

You could even minor in communications and major in something like political science. Getting an internship at a local station while in college would be a great way to get your foot in the door!

Comm would definately be the way to go, or broadcast, and yes, get an internship, it looks impressive. it’s all about who you know.

ha…i was listening to the radio the other day and some girl called in and asked if you had to go to college to be a DJ. He was like “no, not really”…buuut if you must, i’d go for Comm or broadcast journalism

There is a difference between a DJ and a talk show host. A talk show host should know something about the topic the show is focused on (obviously!). So if it’s a political talk show, a major in political science, history, economics, or philosophy would probably be good. I think it would be better to major in one of those subjects, and learn the radio “trade” as an intern, via a college minor, or through a 6-month or 9-month course at a specialty broadcast trade school. Most radio stations and TV networks have web sites, and on those sites they usually have a brief biography of their on-air personalities. From what I’ve read on those sites, relatively few of the famous radio and TV talk show hosts actually majored in communications while in college.

juzam,

Although I don’t listen to KIIS FM, I know that Ryan Seacrest got his degree in journalism. There’s at least one example.

stand up commedy and journalism

you cant major in stand up comedy!!! but if i were you I would do broadcast journalism or radio/television!

you could really do any major becasue radio dj’s really dont need a college education but having one always helps! so you could major in whatever intrests you. it could be biology, finance, pre-law…idk whatever you want really!!!

broadcast journalism and whatever field that you’ll be talking about.
