What to pursue within the marketing industry?

Hi guys!

I’m a junior in college studying Marketing Communications. I’ve found that as far as my strengths go, I tend to thrive best when I’m given set rules and procedures to follow by a manager, rather than being the manager. I have been both secretary and president of my school’s AMA chapter, and have found that being secretary came much more naturally and I enjoyed it much more. That’s not to say I’m lazy (my performance reviews are always very positive with regard to my work ethic, and my meeting minutes were very organized and detailed). What are some roles within the marketing world that would leverage these character traits? Thank you!

Maybe look into the advertising/creative side of marketing, like an art director or copywriter. They are basically given input and are tasked with creating something from that. Is that something that would interest you? Most executives in marketing will need to be on the management/delegating side of things.

If you’d rather be told what to do than be the one who makes decisions, then any position in marketing that isn’t a manager would be fine. If you wanna make more money and don’t mind taking some more technical courses, then I would recommend marketing analytics. Analytics in general is very cut and dry with what you have to do in order to get the results you want, so there won’t be much room to possibly mess up on (unlike a manager possibly making a bad decision). With the way the internet is now and how important data is, I would only imagine that this area specifically is poised to grow rapidly in the future.
