I’m filling out an app where it asks us for each LOR to put their affiliation and relationship.

So I think affiliation is their title (Assistant prof, associate prof, prof, etc…).
Can someone verify that?

Is relationship just his relationship with me?
Like if he taught a class of mine I put “Professor of <insert class=”" name=“”>?"</insert>

Affiliation I usually put Department of Y (their Title is affiliated with X University’s Department of Y)

Relationship I put Research PI or Professor or Research Professor or something similar.

Oh I see. When you put research PI. Are you implying you work in his lab or that he’s a PI of a lab?

Both - that he is the PI of a lab, and that you work in a lab. You can just put “research advisor” if you don’t want to imply both.

What is the difference between research advisor and research PI?

I use them interchangeably.

The “relationship” is their relationship with you. That is Research mentor/supervisor, Academic advisor, or Course instructor.

The “affiliation” is the place they work for, like “Mechanical Engineering Department, University of …”

The “title” is their job title, such as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor.

Thanks everyone.

xraymancs, the application I’m filling out only has “relationship” and “affiliation.” There’s no title. Would it be appropriate to put it with affiliation like “assistant professor of <insert department=”">" or “professor <insert department=”">."</insert></insert>

What usually happens is that the letter writer is asked to fill in the title, no need to put it in a field where it does not belong. It is also possible to correct anything in that screen so don’t fret about it too much.
