Hi,

My D. started to fill out the application and has a couple of questions. Maybe somebody had the same situation and can answer to them.

What to put in “Student ranks” in Application if school doesn’t use a rank?
Just leave it empty, or n/a or something else?

Will a student still be considered for some scholarships like Mark Twain Nonresidential in this case ( no rank ) with ACT 33?

Go to the financial aid website and contact a financial aid advisor directly by e-mail or phone. Surely they have an answer, since some schools do not rank. If you do need a ranking to receive the Mark Twain, tell your HS guidance counselor about it and ask him/her to certify that your student is within the required range. Again, in a no-rank HS, they surely don’t want their students to be shut out of scholarships, many of which are based on rank and scores.

The Honors College uses GPA as an alternative to class rank if your school does not rank. I’ll bet financial aid does the same thing for the Mark Twain. (By the way, be sure to send in that Honors College application. It’s a great perk.) With an ACT score of 33, your son/daughter will also be a Walter Williams Scholar in the journalism school if he/she is in the top 20% of his/her class (I think I remember you’re interested in the j-school).

In our experience last year, there was one glitch after my S was admitted, but it was fixed immediately when I called. Mizzou may be big, but they’re responsive. (The only confusing part is the cashier’s office when you start paying your bill, but I’ve figured that out now!)

Thank you, geezemom,

D. called Admission Office; and she was told it’s ok to leave class rank empty - they will use her GPA + ACT score.

She will definitely apply to Honor College and hopefully will be eligible to be Walter Williams Scholar in the journalism school. As I found out on their website:

Qualifications: To win acceptance into the exclusive circle of top Walter Williams Scholars, incoming freshmen must earn an ACT composite score of 33 or higher (1460 or higher on the SAT). They also must rank in the top 20 percent of the high school class (if the school ranks) or must have maintained a high school GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 scale.

For sure her GPA is greater than 3.25.
