Although I won’t really begin to email coaches until the end of my spring season, my coach and my friends (who are rowing for college) have been debating about what to say to a coach over email.

If anyone here has ever had any sort of interaction with a rowing coach through email (preferably ivy), what did you say? Maybe some sort of sample letter? Do they care about stuff outside of rowing that may shape your characteristics?

I get they want erg times, stature, regatta’s, etc. But do they like to see formality? Or quick cut + dry emails showing that you’re truly interested.

During certain times of the year, Coaches get absolutely swamped with emails. Your intro email should be brief and to the point. Personal info - grad class, ht, wt. Bullet point academics GPA, test scores, AP classes, and of course, rowing stats.

Personalize it to the coach and add a sentence or 2 about what in particular interests you about his school/program

Thank you. What time do you recommend to send one off? I know that they can legally reply as of September 1st, but my feeling is that that is when they get the most emails. I am especially interested in Princeton and Cornell, and I feel that my erg score at the moment (6:42 as a sophomore) should get their attention if I manage to break 6:40 by the end of the spring season.

Should I wait a week (so like September 8th) for it to settle over with these “larger” programs? (HYP), when they aren’t being spammed with emails and recruiting questionnaires?

Don’t wait. Start a pattern of sending emails now. Introduce yourself, acknowledge that the coach can’t reply due to NCAA rules, and periodically (NOT EVERY DAY!) send a relevant update (new PR, good race results, updated academics) just to show sincere interest.

The advice you’ve been given is good. Coaches want your erg time and your SAT scores (and GPA). Presumably you don’t have SATs, so I’d say, there’s still plenty of time. I would wait until spring season ends and yo are actually below a 6:40.
