We are leaving tomorrow for a 4 day long weekend to Scottsdale Arizona. I’ve a business trip and DH and D are tagging along. Can’t wait for the warm weather…

Any recommendations for adults and teen in tow (who do not golf)? Where to eat? What to see?

I was just in Old Town Scottsdale last weekend.

I recommend (highly) Bandera as well as Union Bar and Grill as places to eat. I particularly enjoyed my Macho Salad at Bandera, and my H enjoyed his roasted chicken. The food at Union Bar and Grill was also excellent – the New England clam chowder was to die for … apparently the chef is a Bostonian!

Definitely rent a car.

We did a day trip to Sedona – well worth the drive. Two hours each way in driving – almost all highway however.

Make sure you have Mexican food at least once a day. Ask the locals for recommendations and let them know if you want a place with atmosphere or a more strip mall kind of place (which can have very good food). Sorry, I’m not up to speed on particular ones there but there are plenty.

Bring your bathing suits since you’ll likely want to go swimming in the hotel pool - especially if you’re staying at one of the luxo hotels of which there are many of in Scottsdale and surrounds. Bring your tennis racket as well if you’re into that.

Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright’s school and home. My teenagers both enjoyed our tour! Definitely check the weather - we were there over Christmas and didn’t get to swim once.

We took the very long drive to the Grand Canyon and wore winter coats and hats! It was well worth it though.

If I am not mistaken, the Desert Botanical Garden is in the area. I spent an entire September day there. Of course, I like all botanical gardens, but this one was so different than others I have been to that I found it particularly fascinating.

South Mountain hiking, in Phoenix. I did several very early morning hikes and loved every single minute. Gorgeous.

Arizona in February is cold! Or at least in the opinion of a Scottsdale native All the other advice is great. Pinnacle Peak Patio is a blast if you want fun western style food, but really, Scottsdale offers any type of food you like. Jeep tours are great if you’re in a super touristy mood. For a teenager, there isn’t terribly much to do, but if your daughter likes to shop you should definitely go to Fashion Square Mall, its a bit expensive but a pretty good mall. Enjoy!

It’s supposed to be warming up into the 70s here in San Diego this weekend (today was great out) so Scottsdale will probably be nice as well (the fronts usually move from west to east).

What part of the country are you traveling from? I’m wondering if there’ll be a big difference in weather for you.

Monte’s in Tempe is worth a trip. On the salt river that’s usually dried up. One room after another all built on over time. Great burgers and steaks. Also agree to go to little hole-in-the-wall AZ Mex places.

Another sort of Scottsdale native here. Arizona weather is variable, as the rest of the country in Feb. Warm days, and then there are cold spells when the high is only in the 40’s. Desert has big day night temp swings, and a cold night can be quite nice by afternoon.

Scottsdale is big for shopping, browsing. The 5th Ave. shops and galleries can be fun, for both Southwestern and art in general. First Fridays I’ve heard are fun gallery visiting nights, though not sure if every month. For a slightly less tony atmosphere, the area around Old Town Scottsdale can be good to walk around. The library mall and art center, close to downtown was redone rather creatively.

Desert botanical garden and Phoenix zoo, with a desert emphasis, are in the same area. Near Papago park, on the border of Phoenix and Scottsdale, which can be an easy way to visit some of the desert. They’re those big red buttes you see when flying into Phoenix. Though the better hiking is outside the city as per the links and suggestions above.

Drive the Apache trail east from Mesa for a view of mountainous desert. Visit Cosanti foundation in Scottsdale, if any interest in architecture and utopian communities.

Wow, you folks are fabulous! Thank you. This community is such a goldmine. Here I was wishing I had posted sooner, but of course I still got great ideas in such a short time!

We are having very good luck with weather. High of 75 on Saturday…and we would have been thrilled with a high of 60! Ha. I splurged, passing on my typical economy rental, and reserved a convertible :).
