I’m a prospective student for human ecology ed in the fall for Cornell and I’m planning on flying up to Ithaca to view the college this month. Anything specific I should see? I already scheduled a general tour as well as a human ecology general session. Also does anyone know how far it is from Columbia. If I’m in NY i might as well go visit. (irrelevant but I’m also visiting brown and penn.)
It is four hours from Cornell to Columbia, and then another two hours down to Penn from NYC, barring traffic. Cornell runs the Campus-to-Campus bus four times/day from Ithaca to Manhattan. The bus can drop you either at the Cornell Club (near Grand Central Terminal) or Cornell Med School (roughly 70th & York) but you would need to take taxi from med school or subways from Grand Central to reach Columbia.
Are you trying to visit these four all on one trip? If so, where to you plan to start? Brown is kind of out of the way of the route of the other three. You can travel via train from NYC to Philly, and then back up to Providence.
As to your original question: here is a blog post offering suggestions for admitted students. http://blogs.cornell.edu/admissions/2015/04/08/top-ten-things-to-do-or-see-at-cornell/
Bring comfortable shoes and prepare to walk a lot. The regular campus tour will not take you to the area where freshmen live but you can walk up there on your own. You should also walk down into Collegetown, which is adjacent to the Engineering Quad.
And a favorite of mine from three years ago:
Enjoy!
@CT1417 I saw that video a couple weeks ago and I almost cried at how badly I want to go to Cornell haha. I’m going for a week and visiting family in NY as well as I have about 2-3 days set aside for college visits. I plan on starting at NYU and Columbia on the first day and then heading towards Ithaca and philly on the second day. I’m not 100% sure I’m going to Brown because of timing but I think I can decide that closer to the actual date. Thanks for the helpful info!
Hope you have a wonderful trip…and hope you encounter good weather. It has been a dreadful spring here in the northeast to date, but looking better for the next few days. Have fun!
"Anything specific I should see? "
I’m not sure if it’s the weather for all of these yet- you should inquire if interested- but If you have extra time, and means to get there, after you fisnish with the campus, IMO you should see:
- one or more of the state parks ringing Ithaca
- the Cornell Plantations
–The Farmer’s Market - the dairy bar (where you can get Cornell Ice Cream)
Adding to @monydad’s great suggestions…in case the weather is less than ideal…climb to the 5th floor of the Johnson Art Museum and enjoy the views. If the museum is closed when you are on campus, just walk behind Uris library and enjoy the views in all directions, or walk out on the terrace behind Willard Straight Hall. The sunset from behind Uris can be stunning.
Try to catch a bell tower concert.
If you want to see some of the variety offered on campus, head out to Sapsucker Woods to visit the Cornell Ornithology Lab.

Walk over the suspension bridge. Access is not far from Johnson Art Museum.
Enter Schoellkopf Stadium and just sit up halfway and look around, even if the team isn’t playing.
OK, enough of my walk down memory lane…
