As was expected, I can’t get the classes I need so there’s two openings in my high school senior class schedule. Here are my options:

1) take unweighted classes that will lower my GPA/rank and that I didn’t want to take in the first place, or

2) be an office aide which isn’t counted in GPA but will most likely be frowned upon by the adcoms, or

3) eliminate half of the dilema by sleeping an extra hour and not coming in until 2nd period but that is probably frowned upon by UT as well, or

4) take the one dual credit course offered each of those periods and pray they don’t mess up my rank. I would probably like them and one would be major related but I don’t need any more elective credits.

unless you’re on the edge of being in the top 10%, I’d say go with option 4. You should enjoy your senior year, and that DC course that is major related will benefit in the long run. If you are on the edge, option 2 or 3 will both work, I don’t think UT will get mad if you decide to take advantages of the benefits of senior year. If you are worried about getting a bad parking space, then go with option 2.

No, I’m not fond of option 1. I should have said I’m currently ranked #3. Unless a miracle happens I won’t move up but I don’t want to move down either.

if you are ranked #3 and don’t want to take unweighted classes in case they might mess up your GPA/Rank, then I think you can handle a “community college” class. I would go with option 4 and and take any electives class that you will need to get your bachelors degree that you don’t have an AP credit for (examples are history, govt, fine arts, natural science, sociology, psychology, stuff like that…) but go ahead and read over you degree plan or major requirements before signing up for class. But if you just want a class for the heck of it, then I guess pick something introductory but relevant to your major. One thing I didn’t understood was why are you so worried about your senior year 1 or 2 classes, haven’t you received an any admission letter yet.

My son is in the same predicament, right down to class rank of #3:) He wanted to slack his sr. year and we compromised with taking Art History at a community college this summer and fall, which will count for his High School fine art and will transfer to UT. That way, he gets to leave school early (around noon, I think). And then this spring, he gets to go in late and leave around 1:00. How fun is that? He can hold the Art History transcript from the CC until the end of the year, so it won’t affect his mid-year rank; not that it will matter to UT once he’s accepted. But I looked at the Art History book…and it looks like it’s not going to be an easy class. It won’t be any easier at UT though!

I’m assuming that you’re referring to your high school schedule and not your schedule at UT? If that’s the case, then the obvious choice would be #3 as I would see no reason as to why UT would frown upon going to school an hour later…

As Spock would say, “It is the logical choice”

Okay, all that matters is that you’re in the top 10% for getting into UT. I had an out period, AND I was an office aide for a semester for my senior year and I got in. Don’t sweat it, you’re number 3 so I’m assuming you’re in the top 10%? As long as you are then you really have nothing to worry about I can assure you. :)

The Top 10% hasn’t changed for fall 2010 freshmen. The only changes are specifically for UT but not until the 2011 freshman class and even then they’re minute changes with just a cap of 75% of in-state fish.

Of course, you’re right. I should be admitted long before any HS Senior grades come out but I didn’t know if departments or scholarships frowned on what might be seen as slacking off. Perhaps it’s just my own personal hang up about slacking. I already have college credit for classes I don’t need and now I’m looking at taking more. Not that I’m opposed to taking more, it’s just the principle. I needed the AP class to knock off a degree requirement but it didn’t work into this year’s or last year’s schedule so I’m upset. Ok, it’s not the end of the world and I could always use some more beauty sleep.
