It’s not a couples costume idea, but it’s definitely easy. My husband is a high school math teacher, and before big tests he gives out Smarties candy to his students. So, to continue the theme, every Halloween he tapes the candy to his pants, and he’s… wait for it… a Smartie pants!
Years ago my uncle went to a Halloween party in a suit. He was kind of an odd guy, so no one really thought anything about it. Halfway thru the party he left and came back as Superman. For a variation of that, many times, the kids have dressed as Clark Kent, with slacks, glasses, a button-down shirt and a tie, with the shirt open and a Superman shirt on underneath.
When my son was 12 he wanted to wear a suit and carry a briefcase on Halloween. He said it was the scariest costume adults could ever imagine at their door. I said “What are you?”
He said “The IRS”.
I used to be a wizard with felt and stitch-witchery when it came to making costumes for S and H. I made H a costume that was a large wedge of swiss cheese. Another one was a blackhooded executioner with red drops of blood down his front (he had to carry either a real axe or a plastic weapon, I don’t recall). S had various knight outfits with dragon tabards, and a Prince Caspian in a blue cloak with a yellow sun with wavy rays.
I never made costumes for myself.
Here’s an easy tip: you can make any animal-type costume (i.e. basic cat costume) better by making a large heart-shaped Beanie Baby tag to tie to your wrist.
You: put a slip over a simple black dress
Hubby: tweedy suit, round glasses, white beard & pipe. Maybe carrying a book of psychoanalysis.
He’d be Freud. You’d be Freudian Slip.
24 - that's what I did a millennium ago when Beanies were the rage. Made D's cat costume into a Beanie cat costume (the cat had a name, but I can't remember what it was). She brought home a pillowcase full of candy. :)
A friend and her husband went as characters from Wizard of Oz. He made a spectacular Dorothy.
Back when I was in college a bunch of girl friends came a fussball table - their boyfriends came as cheerleaders.
One more idea: one year I went as a Christmas tree - large green shirt w/ ornaments and battery powered twinkle lights attached and our tree skirt wrapped around my waist. My husband was Santa.
Well…if we are talking best costumes…one year I wore my kid’s college graduation cap and gown. I put a huge price tag on my wrist. One side said $200,000…and the other side said “priceless”.
One year my husband and I went as a pilot and copilot . We wore khaki pants, leather jackets, sunglasses and white scarves with wire in it to make it look like it was blowing in the wind . But to complete the costume , my husband made a six foot long paper mâché airplane complete with wings and a propeller. Looked great, but had to leave it outside when we went to the party.
When my kids were about 6 and 8, we found ketchup and mustard adult costumes at target. They were felt, one red and one (mustard)yellow, with block letters. They had matching hats, like witch hats, as the squeeze bottle tops. We hemmed them then, and Unhemmed them later. Many people thought they were homemade, but they were less than $25 each at Target. they each used them multiple times, and if my husband and I needed a costume, we’d probably use them now.
I’ve seen people dressed as toothpaste and tooth brush: toothpaste wears two white towels with felt letters spelling CREST, pinned wide at top and smaller at bottom, with a red knit cap; toothbrush wears all white clothes with a push mop with the head swiveled around to be parallel to the stick up the back.
MIley Cyrus had enough getups in the Music awards to costume an army!
LOL Katlia. I did the freudian slip in grad school! Have mentioned it here too!! Didnt carry stuff (and had no spouse then)Just wore a full length sllp with the word “freudian” taped on the front and back.
My spouse went as Albert Einstein one year when he was of trick-or-treat age. Most people guessed that he was a hobo!
I really like the Flo and Mayhem idea! mathmom just doesn’t watch many TV ads, I guess.
^^Thumper, cute!
We are not very original in our family. We made our boys go as football players each year since they had so many football jerseys and those white baseball pants…put black paint/makeup under their eyes, football helmets or football caps…one year my older one brought along crutches to signify Tom Brady’s foot injury…
My H and I met at a “hat” party many years ago…he wore a fireman’s hat since he used to be a volunteer firefighter and I wore a Charlie Chaplain hat, when they had Charlie Chaplain commercials for IBM, since that’s where I was working when H & I met! We didn’t do anything about a costume, just the hats!
We’ve only been to two or three Halloween adult parties over the years and my H wore football shirts (how original!) and I dressed up like a cheerleader. Ho hum! Sorry @-)
Do you think more people will be dressing up as the Pope this year? It will be an easy costume to make. I hope it’s not blasphemy to the Catholic religion. I don’t know I’m not Catholic.
I like that one!
Mathmom watches Castle on Hulu and will probably watch Agents of Shield when it’s back on. currently mostly rewatching old Babylon 5 episodes - man what a good show that was! I’d love to come as Delenn, but I’m sure no one would get it.
