I am 5’2" and probably similar in shape to OP, and I could not see myself wearing gourmet mom’s pantsuit. The strapless top is a potential disaster waiting to happen (I am imagining if the dog got loose and you had to wrestle with him, or your knee gave way in the uneven grass and you took a tumble). And the large flower print is not appealing on a shorter person.

In your situation I would want to feel classy and elegant, but not overdressed. Comfortable shoes are a must. Love that so many are eager to chime with with links to possible outfits.

And I would definitely have an honest conversation with H and get his buy in on presenting yourselves as a couple attending. It’s not an option to choose just H, and you need to know ahead of time that H will stand up for you if D tries to invite only him.

I like Eileen Fisher very much but don’t know how well it works for us shorties. The pieces I have had to be altered. Overall, it seems to me, a line for the long and lean. ymmv

I would stay away from linen if there is a lot of sitting on blankets involved, because linen tends to wrinkle badly, and will not look good in photos. Silk or cotton-rich jersey is a better choice, IMO.

Those flax dresses are supposed to be a little wrinkled looking, not ironed ever. : ) Silk would be a nice choice. I like my silk wrinkled a little, too. : )

In a fantasy world where we have no budgets:

As a person who is big around the chest but short on the bottom, I often find petite pants coupled with a regular-sized top the best combo. Petite dresses and tops tent to be very short waisted on me. But I am a few inches taller than EK.

I like the idea of the tunic and capris or linen pants very much. I am also petite and busty and anything but a v-neck makes me look like one huge boob.

TempeMom: thanks for the laugh ^ I agree with those of you who say Emerald’s H should make sure there is no disrespect shown to her. Personally I think he should have stepped in long ago.

EK, I feel for you. It seems darned if you do and darned if you don’t in regards to this D. And you are her favorite whipping boy, so to speak. But that is not the topic.

I do have a graduation later and would probably not wear this as it will be not dressy enough for the crowd I’m going with. I will have to find a dress to wear. Which is unfortunate because I rarely wear dresses and where I live is much more casual than where the graduation is.

I agree that the Lilly Pulitzer jumpsuit would not suit shorter and busty…I somehow zoned out on that important detail, perhaps because I was too busy buying it for myself! Literally, went looking for EK and bought the thing at 6:30 this morning.

For EK, I like the idea of loose or flow-y white linen or silk/linen pants with a closer fitting top in a darker color - perhaps a v-neck faux wrap like this:

if you’ve never worn J. McLaughlin, these knit tops incredibly comfortable and flattering…they really do hug all the right places. The v-neck is high enough for larger busted women, the faux wrap stays put, and the slight ruching is very forgiving of the tummy area. Espadrille wedges and one of the lovely hats alh posted, and you’ll look perfect.

LOL, TempeMom! It gets even worse if one has a round face (I speak from personal experience).

Gourmetmom, it happened to me in the past - I was checking something for someone, and ended up buying it for myself. Love the top! It should look really great with flowy pants and a nice brimmed hat.

Unless I knew that the other women, including D and MOG were all wearing pants, I’d risk being slightly over than under dressed. IMO with your body type, you could never really go wrong with a sleeveless sheath style sun or day dress with a cardigan, dressed up or down with accessories. You can still sit on a blanket in a dress, and I am sure they will have at least some other seating for those who really need it. If the knee scar bothers you, you can use some Dermablend to cover.

Also, another thought is that EK might want to think twice before wearing white. I realize it’s not a wedding, just a reception, and I personally think it’s a stupid rule, but with the way things are with this D, why take that chance?

This isn’t a wedding though, right? Is this a garden party or a cookout? I think we need to know more about the event because the former suggests a dress while the latter could mean dad’s Hawaiian shirt is just fine and mom would look out of place in the dressier dresses.

I generally agree that a dress is best, but EK said that it’s a cookout with blankets on the ground, which sounds very, very casual. If that’s the case, either a pretty pants outfit or a sun dress is appropriate…although again, the MOB should be a bit more carefully dressed than the other guests. I think white pants with a colored top would be fine, but I would avoid a white dress.

I just followed my links are realized that it shows the white pants. Itried to link to the NATURAL (tan) pants with the white top. I agree that I would avoid all white in this situation. I also rejected many nice things because they were black or dark grey, and I figured that with this D any excuse to take offense would be seized upon. :(
