What to Wear to my Audition

I’m sorry, I know this has basically been discussed to death on here, but I’m still not sure what I should wear to my audition tomorrow. I know that I should dress nicely, cover my shoulders, not wear a dress/skirt that stops above the knee/no open toed shoes… but I’m not sure which of my outfits I should wear.
I included pictures.

Thoughts? Suggestions?
Again, sorry for late notice and for starting another thread like this.

Also, I have heels or ballet flats-like, actual ballet flats that I’ve worn on stage. I can walk better in the ballet flats, but the heels look better. Thoughts on shoes?

You don’t say WHAT you are auditioning for. If it were a general audition, such as for college, my reply might be one thing and if it is an audition for a specific role/look, my reply might be something else.

But I’ll go with a generic audition (not for a role or particular show)…

First, you are a very pretty girl and look good in every outfit. Most important, choose what you feel really good and confident wearing.

My favorite of all the options you posted was the very first one in the darker floral/pattern dress. My least favorite is the cardigan.

With a dress, I’d suggest wearing the heels as they would look better most likely, except if you don’t feel you can handle the heels comfortably. Ideally, find shoes with a heel that are comfortable and not too high of a heel.

Break a leg.

(PS…my second favorite of the audition looks is the one that is either a black skirt with a blue shirt or maybe it is a two-toned dress…not positive…It’s the 3rd photo)

Thank you for your input. It’s very helpful.
And I’m sorry, I thought that I had included that it was for a general college audition.

I agree - go with the first outfit. Good luck!

I agree with everyone to the first dress. Also, avoid the sweater. I think heels look best at auditions if you are comfortable with them. If you are a little shaky on them, go with the flats as you certainly don’t want to fall or be less confident! Good luck!

The first one all the way…and the heels.
Wear them around the house tonight…gotta get used to them sometime! Break a leg (well…you know!)

I wasn’t sure it was a college audition because August seems quite early for that. But you have the outfit and now go get 'em.

Thank you very much everyone. I really appreciate your input. And after seeing what you’ve told others, I really value you’re advice.

soozievt, it’s actually really late. Orientation starts next week. I didn’t know that I needed to audition until a few months ago. It’s not a big school for musical theatre and I didn’t see the audition information on the website the first few times I looked.

One more quick question: nylons or bare legs? I know people usually say that you should wear nylons, but I absolutely hate them. And the only pair I have are from a show last year so they’re very dark.

Thanks again!

Don’t worry about the nylons. Break a leg!

You don’t need the nylons. Just go and be yourself and show 'em what you’ve got.

Sorry, didn’t realize it was for a school for THIS fall and that you are already enrolled but trying to get into the major. Let us know how it goes. You look great in that dress.

Thanks so much. I decide to ditch the nylons. The theatre director was wearing a blouse, cappris and sandals, so I left a little overdressed. I thought it would be more formal.

The audition itself wasn’t bad. The interview afterward was a little awkward. They asked me some questions that I had honestly never even thought of so I was very much on the spot. Plus it was so hot so I was sweaty and all worked up from performing-I hate auditions-so I was a little… flustered, I guess.

After we talked for a while they had a student worker help me add some things to my schedule-voice lessons and random theatre credit-and give me dates/times for the first audition of the year and and a meet and greet the first week of class.

Again, thank you all for your input.

For all the kids getting ready to go through college auditions, do you mind sharing the questions they asked? Thanks!

No problem. I’ll let you know what I remember.

Some of the first few questions were about their school/program-had I seen a show there, did I know what shows they were doing last season/this season.

They asked a lot of questions about the last performance I did-getting along with the cast and how did that help the show, how did the themes of the show make things different (it was South Pacific).

Of course they asked asked the obvious what do you want to get out of school/where do you see yourself when you graduate.

There were a few questions about my other interests-in general and in theatre (tech crew, scene design, etc). And then some questions about what I want to learn more about.

After most of the questions were done, they made sure I knew the importance of gaining audition experience and that they try to focus on teaching all aspects of working in theatre-doing backstage and crew work when you’re on IN the show.

Hope this helps!

MIssHap52- Congrats on a terrific audition! Getting the voice lessons, drama classes and audition dates into your schedule sounds very promising.

Again, thank you everyone for all your help. I have a few more quick questions.

How would you dress for an audition for a classical show? My school’s first auditions are tomorrow night and the show is “The Country Wife.” I’ve heard/read that you should dress in a way that resembles the part. I don’t know if I’m auditioning for a specific part or the show in general.

Also, I’m not sure if this question should go here, because “The Country Wife” is a straight play, not a musical. But is Shakespeare too overdone as classical audition pieces? The director suggested using Shakespeare or something from a similar period.

I know, I should really stop asking questions the day before. College is the first time I’ve had formal auditions so I don’t yet know many of these things.
Again, any help/tips/advice would be appreciated. But I understand if it’s late.

I will leave the advice to the experts on this board, just wanted to tell you to break a leg!
