I think people who dislike them are likely in the minority. My dislike of them may stem from identifying them as either uniforms or ultra preppy. I’m not a fan of the chino material or the khaki color and agree with the description that the are awkwardly pedestrian. Darker colors are better IMO. My 70’s hippie roots leave me to do nothing but shake my head at the look below - another one I associate with chinos. Ralph Lauren storefronts are always good for a laugh though.

OK–The RL on-line catalog is horrid. My husband was the only one wearing RL khakis and he shifted from them ten years ago or so, but they were his brand for a good while.

Those VV khakis do look awful but perhaps this is just a bad year. Both boys have them and they look good on them. Perhaps they just need to be washed and hung to dry to look less prissy.

I probably shouldn’t add that my son’s khakis are held up with a VV belt, but no one sees it under the hoodie.

Whatever attire you decide, just remember to take a shower, put on some fragrance-free deodorant, brush your teeth and make sure your ears and nails are clean. If you like you can put a dab of fresh, clean cologne (not Axe) such as Yves Saint Laurent L’Homme or Armani Code on the back of your neck.

All 3 of mine would have put on corduroy (jeans), a white or gray t-shirt with a wool sweater over it to go to something like the OP is talking about in the winter. In the summer they would have put on khakis and a white or gray t-shirt with a polo over (untucked). It’s their “go-to” clothing for adult social non-dressy functions. I’d bet money there are kids in jeans, however and I think that would be fine for non-distressed jeans with a shirt tucked in and a belt or a sweater over.

Oh BTW, the RL polo khakis are nice. All 3 of the boys and my H like them and own them in a light color for summer and a darker color for colder weather. The material is heavier than cheap khakis and they hang nicely.

The connor kennedy pic would be my guys if they had to wear a tie and a sportcoat and it’s somewhat the “uniform” safe look I think in that age group…but they don’t like those vineyard-like vines icon ties. Horizontal rep stripes rule with them and the diagonal rep stripes are for “dads.” I guess they makes them preppy if you have to label it.

Momof3boys–the VV icon ties rule here. (Am hoping I am not pelted with fruit.) Our HS sells a VV tie that they had produced using the HS’s logo. Boys all have to wear shirt and tie on game/meet days so there are a lot of those VV ties floating around some days.

I wish my boys would wear cords. I have stopped trying. All tee shirts have to be gray or navy, and I can no longer buy w/o them present.

I ended up changing to the corduroys last minutes and was way overdressed. Most of the boys there wore jeans. One had jeans and like a button down with a sweater over it. Some of the graduates of the school that went though had like full suits on. I ended up not even thinking about it the whole time anyway :P

Thanks for reporting back, CSIHSIS. We will be here discussing men’s fashion until you graduate from college, in case you have other events to attend and need further advice.

CSIHSIS–a sweater worn over the button down or a sweater tied around his shoulders? I was really hoping I wouldn’t see the latter that now that the 80s are long gone.

Glad to hear on both fronts! Good luck with your decision-making. And NeuroticParent was correct; you can always return here for fashion or school choice advice. We seem to have plenty of opinions to share!
