Having said that, there is currently a photo on FB of one of my sons wearing khakis (not his, as far as I know). My boys went east to college and now have friends with all colors of pants.

I don’t understand the dislike of khakis either. It’s the non-jean alternative for guys. What other pants do they make? I don’t see any boys in cords, only jeans or casual khakis (American Eagle, etc).

I cannot imagine paying $80VV prices for pants for my son! Thank goodness there is an outlet near here, I can get jeans at a decent price, considering how fast he is still growing.

Wait…really not trying to drag this khaki conversation out longer…but khakis can’t be synthetic. They have to be cotton, or how can they be called khakis? Tommy Bahama pants in khaki colors sold to middle-aged men are not khakis. And, they have to be flat front with side slash pockets, but that is just personal preference in our house.

Surfcity–I would never pay VV retail prices for anything. There is a huge outlet about an hour from my house. Also, if you wait until the retail stores have their huge annual sale and then mark the prices down another 30% or so, prices come down to the Gap sale level. On-line has better selection than the retail stores by the time the massive markdowns kick in.

The outlet takes it further and regularly has men’s merchandise at buy two, get one free and women’s at buy one, get one free. So, three ties for $100 or three pairs of flip-flops for $45.

How very holistic of them! ;)

^
Yes, they embrace diversity and do not judge anyone based on the shade of their trousers.

Re: Synthetics. I guess I was thinking of Docker’s, ill-fitting khaki-colored polyester-blend slacks, spotted on an older relative in the OC.

Re: What other kinds of pants exist? Around here you see jeans of all varieties, a lot of sweats and also American Apparel type pants (not necessarily at these prices): [American Apparel - Pants,Slacks](http://store.americanapparel.net/subCategory/index.jsp?subCatId=cat33205)

Cringing at “Docker’s, ill-fitting khaki-colored polyester-blend slacks, spotted on an older relative in the OC” without even understanding the OC reference.

As long as they’re flat front, it’s all good. It’s the pleated fronts that ruin the look.

O.C.=Orange County, the closest khakiville

[Trousers - MEN - United States](http://www.massimodutti.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/category/duttius/en/30109527/368009/Trousers)
skinny pants.

^LOVE that the onus is on men to be skinny for once…give the ladies a break!

There aren’t many men who can truly carry off that skinny pant look. Was it Tom Ford or Thom Brown a few years ago who started showing skinny pants that stopped a couple of inches above the ankles?

I guess I am just too much of a traditionalist. I don’t like tuxes with narrow lapels and regular ties either.

Aren’t chinos and khakis the same thing? I always thought that chinos referred to casual cotton pants - flat front, slash pockets. Came in various colors. Everyone called them chinos years ago, and somewhere along the way the tan version became known as khakis. Maybe it’s Ralph Lauren’s fault.

I don’t want to drop a bomb, but what does everyone think of Nantucket reds?

Me too! http://www.perfectweddingguide.com/wedding-blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/70s-tux-1.jpg

@Gourmetmom, my S wears Nantucket reds. I think they are fun.

GMT–you know that is not what I mean!

I wish any of the males in my house would wear something other than khakis, but it is not to be. Nantucket reds would just be too bold a step for them.

In Bermuda, they actually wear long-sleeve business shirts with shorts.

Hmmm, khakis are still the topic here. I think khakis are fine (I can see neuroticparent scrunching her eyebrows) as long as it’s not pleated or baggy. Here is David Beckham wearing khakis.

I am not fond of the skinny, ankle length jeans on men. Maybe it’ll grow on me. Maybe.

I’m not sure how people who grew up wearing tie-dyed T-shirts and, later, leisure suits can be offering good advice on how to dress. ;)

It is quite amusing for the kid to ask us but I’m a Gen-Xer Lorem so I didn’t grow up wearing tie-dyed shirts.
