There’s this question: “Please use the space below to provide details about the change in progression through secondary/high school that you indicated above.”
I am taking a gap semester and am applying for colleges in the spring because of some family conditions. What information should I include in this section like why I took a gap term and what I did during that time?
But why are you applying for spring admission? Many college courses are full year courses starting in the fall term. You could end up being very out of sequence.
Hoping the OP clarifies, but I read this as they are not applying for college admission for the fall after their senior year but rather for the spring term.
Can you clarify your situation? Did you graduate HS in May/June of this year? And are applying to go to college starting in Jan?
If you already graduated you don’t explain anything in the section you highlighted in your OP.
But, you do need to explain your gap semester in the area of the common app that asks if you took a gap year (yes, explain it even if you are only taking a GAP semester.)
It would also be helpful if you HS counselor addresses your reasons for a gap semester in their LoR/report.
Some things happened in my family so I had to stay home for a semester after I graduated this July, so that’s why I will be applying for the spring semester. I could wait another year for the fall 2025 semester, but I would really prefer to start as soon as possible and just take summer classes to be on track again.
Based on everyone’s answers, I do appear to need to write about it on my common app.
If that’s true, then I think it’s fine for your guidance counselor to include something but you still have to answer the question because it’s telling you to do so.

I’d simply write the reasons that you were gone - a family health matter…or whatever it was…the required you to be absent from school for the semester.
