good rec/essay

OOS

want to get into UCSD

UCSD seems like a bit of reach with those stats. It’s possible though. Write a damn good essay.

The top 12.5% of CA students is typically who is eligible for UC. However, since you’re OOS, it’s going to be especially difficult since you barely make the top 20%, and your GPA is rather weak. For an in-stater, you’d be a match at UCR, UCSC, and UCM. However, being an OOSer will probably make those somewhat iffy.

how about UCI or UCD? do they have good science programs?

also, if a student attends a lower tier UC, would they have a better chance of transferring into a better UC than someone from a OOS college

They do, but they’re even more selective than UCSC, UCR, and UCM.

Inter-UC transferring isn’t as easy as transferring from a community college. More than that, transfer admissions for out-of-state students are especially competitive (Berkeley and UCLA, for example, have about 10% acceptance rates for OOS transfers). Even if you went to a UC for two years, you would still likely be considered an OOS applicant for transfer admissions purposes, unless you set up residency. See this:

Thanks for the info, so with my stats, is it even worth the time applying to UCSD?

Well, it doesn’t take much time, so I’d say yes! But I really wouldn’t count on it.

My stats by the way were 3.9 weighted, 1900 on the SATs, plenty of extra stuff, and I didn’t get in (and I’m in state).

You’d probably have better luck shooting for a private school in California, since the UCs have a very low OOS acceptance rate.
