What was your most off the wall (out of character) holiday

My W and I hoping to do a really different holiday this fall. It is our 25th anniversary and a very long time since we have taken a real holiday so this year we are looking at doing a walk from Vienna to Prague. Actually you only walk about 12 miles on average per day for 8 days and get all of the transfers to the next hotel and such. It just sounds fantastic and what a change of pace from most holidays. If we do it we will be adding 3 days in Moscow before and 3 days in Prague after. Expensive!!! but what a different way to see a country and to relax. I hope we can make it happen.
What have been your most different Holidays ???

I knew as soon as I read your post that you must be from Canada! “Holiday” meaning vacation to people outside the US! (we have a cottage in Canada so no offense intended, just a love for the different culture/traditions!)

I thought you were going to express your love for St. Patricks Day! (a “holiday” I never really understand the enthusiasm for - clearly I’m not Irish!)

Wow, I love that idea. I’d love to do a hiking holiday in Scotland or Hadrian’s Wall.

Our most different holiday for us was last December’s trip to Jordan. We are very much do it yourself types. We’ve done a lot of trips where we don’t have reservations ahead of time. (Though I may be too old for the suspense now, as you call looking for space in the inn.) Anyway, we had planned to go to Jordan, but the political situation was iffy enough we hadn’t actually done anything about it. Finally about two weeks ahead of time we decided to do it. DH had no desire to drive, dealing with signs we couldn’t read and a country that doesn’t believe in addresses. So we ended up booking a private tour. There was a flurry of emails and the final touches were settled days before we left. We felt like princes being driven from site to site, but it was so nice to be able to see things on our schedule and we were able to schedule in things like picking up our son from his study abroad program ourselves and having a couple of days with him. Going in the winter we got upgrades on rooms even though we asked for 3 star accommodations (out of 5.) Great trip, beautiful country. Petra is so much more than what you see in* Indiana Jones.*

percusdad; WONDERFUL idea. H and I did the Wainwrights walk across England last year and LOVED it. We hiked, on average 10 miles a day and slept in BnB’s or very small hotels. There isn’t much development on the walk. Do you have a link to the one you are thinking of? Maybe I can got next year.
Mathmom, the Hadrians wall walk is only 75 miles! You could do it in a week and it would be great, too.

We usually stick close to home & go camping so our " unusual" holiday was going to San Francisco a few years ago. First time on a plane together, we didnt rent a car but took public transportation & walked from our hotel at Fishersmans wharf. Ended up walking much farther than we planned a few times when we didnt understand the transit system.
After that my knee really started to go downhill, so a word to the wise, when your body hurts, pay attention to it!
I would love to do a walking tour, I used to walk all over.

Not sure if I can post a link but will try and I am sure the Mods with gladly remove it if I have broken any rules. [Bike, Walk, & Multisport tours. Canada, Europe, Iceland, Israel. Sea Kayak in Nova Scotia.](http://www.freewheeling.ca/) is the link.

I walk on average 6 to 8 miles a day right now thanks to my dog and both my W and I love walking so this could be a lot of fun.

You should dig up the movie The Man Who Knew Too Little starring Bill Murray. He’s a tourist who goes to visit his brother in London. The brother is busy so he pays to have Bill’s character become part of a street theatre improv play in which he’s part of a crime drama. By complete accident he becomes part of an actual spy plot but he doesn’t know he’s in it and thinks it’s all part of the play.

That would be a holiday.

Two of my most out-of-character “holidays” actually fell on holidays…

Thanksgiving, 2010 we were iin Giza/Cairo. Just 2-3 months prior to the Arab spring. We got in/out just in time.

5-6 years ago, we spent Xmas-eve wandering around the ruins in Pompeii. Back to Rome for a big dinner, followed by attending midnight mass at St Peter’s. Terrific experience (and I’m not even Catholic, tho W is). On Xmas day, I phoned my sister who was hosting the family from the Spanish Steps. In my best fake-Italian, I said “Buon Natale a la Italia” when she answered. And she immediately hung up the phone thinking it was a prank call… ha.

Ramadan in the UAE and the Sultanate of Oman. New Years Eve in an eco hotel in India that was formerly the summer palace of Indian princesses.
