I just got home from moving my sophomore daughter into her dorm. Last year she was in Shuttles and loved the new, updated feel of it. However…this year she moved into Morrison McGinnis and LOVES it soooo much more. MoMc is older and has an old fashioned feel to it even thought the carpet and paint looked very new. This year she is in a single room but she met some girls who have doubles and gave us a little tour of their rooms - the double rooms are much, much larger in MoMc than Shuttles and the closet space doesn’t even compare - three to four times bigger in MoMc than Shuttles. If we had to do her freshman year over, she would avoid Shuttles and go for the older dorms.

Just thought I would pass on what we learned.

S is in Virginia-Snider and has one of those dorm rooms with a separate study room. Nicely maintained, lots of room, but disappointed that he does not get Verizon cell service inside his room. Needs to go outside to make/receive calls.

For Virginia Snider I’d recommend the Virginia side which has community bathrooms instead of suite bathrooms. You share the bathroom with more people, but the community bathrooms get cleaned every day, whereas the suite bathrooms only get cleaned once a week, unless they’ve changed it since I was there. Not having a bathroom in the suite means the study and bedroom are bigger as well.

^^^Funny, SMUMom, my son has just the opposite opinion! Spent freshman year in Morrison McGinnis and liked it okay. His room was HUGE and, I thought, very nice. Sophomore year is in Shuttles, and he LOVES it. Likes it much better than MoMc! I think because it’s newer and feels more “social” to him. Has all those nice lounges on each floor. Has a clean, hotel smell. Plus, it’s closer to all of his classes and the dining hall.

In MoMc, he was surrounded by athletes, who he liked just fine – but he’s not an athlete-type and so they weren’t exactly his type of kid.

He also was disgusted by the community bathrooms at MoMc, which he said LITERALLY had POOP on the seats and even on the floors quite often! Not to mention the frequent pee on and around the toilets. And they constantly smelled like dirty jock straps. (I will admit, so did the woman’s bathroom for some reason!!!) He was shocked at how gross the other boys were about their bathroom cleanliness. He actually left anonymous notes on the stalls at times asking the boys to clean up after themselves and not poop on the seats.

So, he much prefers the suite style bathroom and the MUCH, MUCH SMALLER Shuttles dorm room. (His dorm room is proabably about 1/3 or 1/4 the size of his MoMc room. Really.
