What were the unexpected "hot" schools in your area this year?

Our school eventually publishes a matriculation list, but right now I am basically relying on things I am being told (including in conversations with various school officials).

Edit: This inspired me to check and the 2024 matriculation list is actually out, but like with last year’s it doesn’t specify how many per college (a change from years before last). For last year I could basically figure it out from SCOIR, but I am not sure that is available yet for this year (and I am not planning to do it comprehensively, perhaps not at all, even if I could).

Huh. Thank you everyone for the replies. I don’t think our HS does that - at least, when my older child (HS class of 22) graduated we didn’t know of any place like that where information was posted. The only people I knew about were (1) his friends; (2) the kids of my friends; or (3) kids who got awards or some kind of special recognition and during it the presenter would say “next year Johnny will be attending Famous Name U” or something.

Does your high school publish a yearbook? Senior bios usually the intended college and major. It is too early for class of 24 yearbooks, but 2023 and earlier have been published.

S24’s school creates a slideshow shown at graduation. Each student’s slide lists much the same information as found in the bio section of the yearbook. This slideshow is disseminated through the school’s social media after graduation. I used information from this slideshow to determine that although the graduation program indicates that students were accepted at more than 140 schools, they plan to attend fewer than 50 of those schools.

In North Louisiana, tons of University of Louisiana-Lafayette kids this year. LSU has just gotten so expensive for the average Louisiana kid; it’s insane. But in the past, ULL hasn’t been so popular in this area. Happy to see more people going there!! My family is from around there and I love that area

The seniors at our small high school (graduating class of 29) all compared notes and on graduation day, they announce where each kid was going to college.

I follow the “decision page” of a few local schools and our district publishes where kids are going (or there post secondary plans) in the graduation program.

Our yearbook adds a map at the back with callouts for each school that a graduate will be attending. Think it printed may 6 this year, so not all included.

We use a feederish private HS, so I think this is, among other things, basically part of their marketing to prospective families.

College “Confidential”

We visited with S23 and it is on D25s list. I thought the area was very friendly and nice.

Our local district used to publish the colleges kids would be going to but stopped doing it probably 15-20 years ago. I think it might’ve been seen as not cool for kids who weren’t going to college, not sure. Definitely was not in my kids’ yearbooks.

Our local schools do the same. It’s usually coordinated by the senior class officers.

Penn State really jumped up at our metro NYC public high school. Seems like it just got trendy this year.

Schools that have been steadily rising over the past five years: VA Tech, U Maryland, Elon, Northeastern.

SUNY’s are always popular. There seems to be an increase of commits to New Paltz and Buffalo. This year’s Val is going to SUNY Binghamton on a full ride which is terrific! He is a great kid and beloved in our town, so I wonder if there will be even more apps to Bing next year.

Our local class instagram pages also list people who are going into the military, attending trade school, or taking a gap year. It’s more a “future plans” thing, not limited to the college-bound.

I dunno. Our schools just don’t publish any of that info. Used to but not anymore.

Yes, Miami of Ohio was big with a high school 4 hours away. Great in state engineering program

Have you looked on Instagram for “HS Decisions 24”? This is where my kid showed me it was.

Bay Area

Syracuse is getting more attention, Newhouse in particular. SMU and TCU are continuing to grow in popularity and there are more kids going to Southern schools overall.

Northeastern continues an up trend and while it is getting harder our school has a lot of success there with acceptance rates far above the published numbers.

More kids than normal at the top SLACs. Some are athletes but not all. The Val is going to Williams where typically it would be a top UC, Stanford or an Ivy.

Our kids went to the same HS we did, I’ve never seen any college listed in bios. In our day, we could write a paragraph and a quote, our kids could only put a quite.

We are in Bend Oregon and sending two to Syracuse (including mine). Have only had one in last ten years. And football team will be good this year, which should garner more attention
