I take it a good deal of parents on College Confidential are professionals or white-collar workers just as the demographics of students on this site tend toward a middle to higher class socioeconomic status.
So, what were you like in high school? Do the geeks really get to work over the football stars? Just curious. :p

This is funny. I’ll go first. Me: cheerleader, homecoming queen, vice president of class, top 30 percent of class hahaha–I teach at a community college. Hubby: football captain, top five in HS class, brilliant, quiet type–mid-level executive and retired Army colonel. Life is good.

^ No way! The football captain and cheerleader actually got married? That’s cute…my boyfriend and I are just the stereotypical geeks so this is why I’m curious. heh.

I was in Iowa and he was in Connecticut. However, my very nerdy daughter loves to tell people about us.

both of us (me in Detroit and he in Springfield MO)—artsy freakish dorks in HS. (naturally we met in Hollywood)

Total nerds

Geeks - we met in HS at debate tournament! I was on 2 varsity teams (swimming & lax). a decent, but no stellar athlete.

Me, total geek. Worked on the lit mag, top five in class. worked an outside job, so very little HS involvement.

H–val of his class, EIC newspaper, band, former soccer star but messed up ankle.

went to same HS, but didn’t meet till I had graduated–he was one year behind me.

This is fun.

Me - outgoing, editor of the paper, drama club, pom pom girl, one of those girls that everyone knows, but I only had a few “true” friends

Him- Quiet. Worked a lot while in high school. No activities, no sports, never went to the prom

Not sure why we work based on that, but we do. :-)

Me - grew up in Indiana on a farm. Cheerleader, Majorette, Class Secretary, into everything, including Prom Committee and Homecoming Court, Band, Choir, you name it. Graduated near the top in my class. Definitiely the Type A overachiever type. I was popular, but also had only a few “true” friends. Totally small town USA. Grew up to be a Nurse and Psychologist.

Him- Outgoing, but not as much as me. Grew up in NJ in the suburbs, dad worked on Wall Street. Met at UCLA Medical Center in the elevator. He would NEVER go to prom, total outdoorsy nature type. Also an over achiever. Successful physician. Great dad and husband. We would never have dated in H.S.

Not sure why we work either, but we will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary next month.
Live in San Diego. Soon to be an empty nester.

Surprisingly both of us grew up in the foreign service, but we met in college. We were both kind of nerdy in high school though I think I was more outgoing than he was. He played JV tennis, I did JV modern dance (don’t ask, it was an equity thing!). I always wanted to run things in high school, but was never elected to anything so I was just a busy worker bee. We were both heavily involved in Scouting and both got top awards there. Scouting gave me leadership opportunities I never got at school.

He’s a PhD who does cancer research. I’m an architect.

We didn’t have football (girl’s school) or a val (no ranking), but the leaders of our class aren’t ruling the world, but are doing fine. One writes for the New York Times, another does something in state government, another is a gynocologist.

Both of us were pretty much middle of the road kids in a very affluent H.S. He because he had transferred, had a noticeable accent and was shy, I was from the very wrong side of the tracks and he didn’t know the right side from the wrong side. We each came into our own in our different colleges.

Me: Awkward, geeky valedictorian of an inferior high school in a low-rent suburb who happened to have a part-time job in a swimming pool store.

Him: Awkward, geeky ham radio enthusiast who attended a much better high school in an adjacent, more upscale suburb, but whose life did not revolve around school. He also happened to have a part time job at the same swimming pool store.

We met while I was still in high school but he was in college.

It’s my parents who were the classic combo: my father was captain of the football team, and my mother was a cheerleader (at a different school).

Me: geeky, top 10, NHS, band, introvert, bookish…and very active in the arts community outside the HS and an LAC for college. H: popular, cute, social, smart slacker, country club, and a big state uni. A long lasting marriage of opposites sorta a Laura and George story LOL only we ended up with boys.

Same high school

Me: somewhat nerdy, well-liked but clearly not part of the “popular” crowd. Student government officer, top 5% (though I didn’t know that until graduation), one that the teachers liked and expected to do well (thank you, God, for a super-smart older sister!)

Him: quiet and not very academic. Hung out in the wood shop. Worked lots of hours at an after-school job. Small circle of very close friends.

We married during undergraduate years. He went from being an OK student to straight A’s and a fully-funded grad program.

Now: I teach, he is top scientist with a small to medium sized company.

Same high school (rural small town south).

Me: cheerleader, yearbook staff, band, church choir, Beta club (the equiv. of NHS at our sch),bunch of other random clubs, top 10, popular group. Always had afterschool job. (single parent family). Went to directional state u.

Him: (3 years older than me). Top 10, band, church choir,Beta club, quiet, ran with the outsider crowd, p/t job every day of the week including Sat.
(UNC) Morehead scholarship nominee. Big state u. (not UNC).

None of our parents were college educated. DH was first in his family to grad. from college. I was the second in my family after my older sis.

We dated my freshman year/his senior year. Broke up when he went off to college.
Got back together four years later.

We married after my soph. year in college…28 years in June.
Now: I was in nursing(BSN) for awhile but quit when kids came along. Now, I teach preschool. He’s an engineer (BME)at a large power generation company.

Right before I graduated someone told me that they would have asked me out but they figured I probably already had a boyfriend. Still not sure what that meant. I was smart, very quiet, never dated, worked 4 hours a day during school and 8 hours when I didn’t have school. Sometimes the girls smoking in the restroom thought I was a teacher because I had to dress up for work and they would panic. I hated school and my life.
I don’t know how my husband was in school but I get the impression he didn’t hate it.

And I would like to add that both husband and I ended up with government jobs.

My husband attended high school in a different state. He was senior class president and graduated in the top ten in his class. The year he graduated from high school, I was in 7th grade. :)

I was an artist , not as interested in academics as social life. Graduated a semester early to work and save money before going off to college. Not very active in clubs and extra-curriculars as I worked all the way thru high school.
Husband was a severe dyslexic that grew up in Scandinavia. He skipped a lot of school , but not to sleep in and be lazy…instead, he started his own business at the age of 13
( still have it to this day ) He was very active in tennis and an idea kind of guy.
He regrets not getting more education , but there simply was not a lot of support for students with his learning disabilities. Most people wouldn’t guess that he really cannot read, yet he moved here to the US , alone when he was 18 to follow his dream
