What won't you skimp on?

No junk food for sure.

I have two pairs of Oakley sunglasses. Before I got them, I had several pairs of “Fake Oakleys” that were going around. At that time, I was breaking them left and right. I’ve had one pair of my Oakleys for 5 years now and the other for about 4. One pair my dad bought used from a friend and the other my sister bought with her discount when she worked in sporting goods…

Prescription eyeglasses and frames.

Prescription eyeglasses and frames
I used to say that, but with my current pair the frames are ok, but the lens coating is a POS. The frames & lens I bought for 1/4 of the price at another shop lasted longer.

If I want something, I usually just get it, within reason of course.

Good for you, my grandparents were so frugal they paid cash for their home in a smancy Seattle neighborhood. They left my mom over a million when they died about 18 years ago- which she promptly went through except for what my brother in law managed to invest for her- and my brother is going through *that *since he was laid off before she died & he can’t find another job.

I would rather eat less food than eat cheap bread & butter.
I also haven’t managed to move to a cheaper place to live.
( but the summers are worth it)

If you have good galsses, the coating is probably under warantee. I had a problem with one lens a year or so ago and they replaced it at no charge

Thanks for the reminder- they were (not including what ins paid) well over $1000 ( I think the lens were $700 + for the edge rolling , the high index the progressive part & the non reflective coating)

I was just so po’ed at the optometrist however, for not giving us D2s contact prescription that it didn’t occur to me. ( her prescription was a year old, although they had written the date wrong & actually had it as 14 months old. I knew * that wasn’t right* because she wasn’t even in the country when they said she had her appt- the state allows Drs to give out prescriptions up to two years- but leaves it up to the Dr)

cbreeze - I am looking forward to both kids being out of college so I can lengthen my “won’t skimp on” list like you have!

Plumbing fixtures. I have no problem spending $ on faucets, as I want them to last and in the end water damage from leaks and plumber calls make it worth it!

I won’t drink cheap wine, but find plenty of values in the $13-20 range.

Can’t live without Diet Coke.

I once completed an online calculator that told me what my time was worth an hour. After that, I sold the lawnmower and now pay someone $30/week to cut grass & clean up the yard - it used to take me 3+ hours/week.

One area I am cheap on is sunglasses, as I’m always losing or breaking them, so I have a few $10-15 pairs from Target around the house. I would never spend the $ on the Ray-Bans my husband has.

wow nj mom you only pay $30.00 a week for lawn cutting/work!!

My reaction exactly, sistersunnie. Ironically, we just got our proposal for this year’s lawn cutting & it’s way more than $30. But it’s still something we’'ll pay for to spare us the time taking care of the lawn.

H does all our yard work, tho mom would prefer he hire someone to cut our trees which he insists on tackling himself as well. Yard services in HI cost quite a bit as well but worst of all make a huge racket & spray dust & debris everywhere with their loud blowers and other loud equipment. Most folks I know who have folks come & cut their grass pay 2x that amount.

We have a large lot (0.3 acres), so it is so worth it. They guy does like 3-4 neighbors’ houses at the same time, so they work efficiently - one guy with mower, another with edger and 3rd with blower. I know some neighbors pay more for guys that also call themselves landscapers, but they really don’t do a very good job with that.

I pay over twice that but have an acre, all lawn. They do a wonderful job and its worth every cent. I couldnt and wouldnt do it myself. So I guess thats a splurge on my part.

I skimped on my yard work- took out all my sod myself- since H didn’t care about lawn enough to cut it a couple 4 times a year-
OMG it is a lot of work- but fun.

replaced it with shrubs- trees, groundcover, annuals & perennials- veggie garden, paths, patio, benches & such.

I think if we had 0.3 acres DH would insist he could do the lawn himself. We have 2 acres…and large chunk is wooded but there is a very sizable lawn which someone ELSE mows…thank goodness!!

We mow ~5 acres. No way we could afford someone to mow that. It wasn’t so bad when I had 2 teenage boys at home. Now, not so much. I don’t want to mow this much for the next 20 years.

Appliances…I do buy high-end appliances. I feel that the extra bucks spread over their lifetimes is not unbearable. And, since they do get daily use, it’s ok.

another thing I don’t skimp on… I love heated seats in cars. If it’s an available option, I want it. LOL My H doesn’t like having the regular heat on very high in cars (even with the personal temp controls), so my heated seat lets me stay warm

BTW…my dogs love heated seats, too. LOL And, they’re great for helping keep “takeout” food warm on the way home!).

I like my magnetized sunglass “clip” ons, to add to my eyeglasses when I need them to be sunglasses. (I used to have true clip-ons, and they were a bit of a pain).

I bought some of those & liked them. Unfortunately, they no longer carry many of those styles at Costco any more. It is kind of nice having a separate pair of Rx sunglasses. Of course I splurged & bought them for each of my kids WAY before I would consider getting them for myself. :)

Another vote for heated seats. My present car has them and I would never buy another car without them. You can all laugh since I live in coastal central Ca.
This past summer I finally purchased nice progressive prescription sunglasses in a frame I love. I wish I had done it years sooner. Such a wonderful treat!
