What would an acceptable amount of debt be for a Nuke Eng?

I REALLY want to go OOS for college which means costs is a MAJOR factor. Say I get accepted to an OOS school. I want to know how much financial aid would be acceptable, besides a full ride of course. I mean I can get accepted to OOS all I want but if I can’t afford it in the end then I’m stuck in-state. How much debt could I handle after undergrad if I would make a nuclear engineers salary, which is about 60k, after college? Or maybe the better question is what is the average amount of debt for an engineer coming out of college?

I’d suggest sticking with in-state…for undergrad this is smart. Just think with the money you save you can pick your choice of fancy expensive grad schools as long as your grades are good.

Typical rule of thumb I’ve heard from forbes is don’t graduate with more debt than you make for starting salary.

Another comment, you may get more financial aid from oos privates than publics…

My son visited a research reactor last week and he said that it was a very cool experience. That said, the enrollment levels for nuclear engineering are so low that I’m surprised that they still run the program - maybe the presence of the research reactor requires them to run the program.

What you might do is contact the departments at the schools that you are interested in to ask them what your chances are for aid/scholarships. The other popular approach is to go into the parents forum, post your stats and ask for schools which would provide substantial financial and merit aid.

Very good points. thx
