I would have liked to write and illustrate children’s books.
Me too, or at least illustrate them. I actually gave it a whirl in my 40s when I quit one job and hadn’t yet gotten enough work on my own as an architect. I got close, got to some conferences and had a critique with an editor, but mostly I just collected rejection letters.
I’m now retiring from architecture and painting more. I’ve got work in two local galleries before the holidays and will have several paintings with a county art organization early next year. I have to juggle around DH’s travel plans though!
When I was young I dreamt about owning a yarn store. Back then I used to knit a lot. But I wouldn’t want the stress of worrying about if I was making money. I would just like to bring in a lot of beautiful yarns, have knitting classes, sell yarns to nice customers (no difficult ones).
It’s the sporting events. The school is required to have a custodian on duty during the hours any event is scheduled. It’s all overtime.
I have a children’s book started…will I ever finish it? ![]()
My main career dream was always to work for/on Sesame Street. I think I would have enjoyed and been a good pediatric occupational therapist.
But if I think more about the present “me” and work as being taking a hobby of sorts to a paid degree…
- I would enjoy working in some capacity at a low-key coffee/bake shop.
- I would enjoy working in some capacity at a vintage shop (not a dusty old antique shop but a cool vibe shop with some vintage furniture, clothing, home decor - and a little spot to sit and have #1 above, a coffee and baked good.
- I’d also love to take a bunch of cooking classes and then share my knowledge and teach others how to cook delicious and healthy food on a budget.

I worked in banking operations/investment administration for a number of years before becoming a permanent stay at home parent.
The careers I think I would have enjoyed didn’t really exist when I went to university. Even if they had, I didn’t then know that they would have been of interest to me, and I also wouldn’t have believed that I’d have had the aptitude to pursue them.
Retrospectively I would have enjoyed either being some kind of data analyst (I do love me a good spreadsheet) preferably applied to scientific research or social improvement, or a paleo/archeogeneticist.
My local, independent bookstore was hiring a clerk a while back and I was very tempted to apply.
I just don’t want to be tied down now.
Same here, @FallGirl. I’ve always wanted to work in a library and have volunteered a bit with our charming town library in Maine. They asked if I wanted to serve on the board, but I don’t want to be tied down while we’re here during the summer. Librarian cat-lady living in a remote lighthouse is my late-life dream.
I see mathmom’s art on the regular, and she is quite talented.
I’d love to see some!
@mathmom - can you please post some photos of your art? Apologies if you have done so in the past, and I missed it.
I tried to edit pictures to remove my name and they just repost the old pictures even though I made new files. I’ll try posting a second new post. Very weird.
I did this for two years, it wasn’t fun.
Yeah, I attended a couple of board meetings which partly informed my decision.
I’m posting pictures again as the old ones had my name on them and post wouldn’t edit.

[/grid] Wow they came up with my name again. They must be in some secret cache somewhere. I’ve edited yet again and I think it will be okay this time!
I worked as a librarian for a while when my husband was at Caltech. It was a professor’s private collection which he made available to the students. Edwin S. Munger, 88 - Undergraduate Admissions He was a great guy and I really enjoyed that job. My experience was shelving library books as an undergrad. My responsibilities included making clippings from newspapers, cataloging new books and advising kids who were writing papers.
Oh, I want to be The Dogist on Instagram. I would love to just go around taking photos of dogs!
I have thought about that! I wonder if he has franchises? Like I could be the Dogist of (area of the city where I live).
Beautiful! You are so talented!
Thank for you for making the effort to share even though it was seemingly frustrating with the name issue
Thanks. Computers!
