What would happen if US News went out of business?

Hmmmm I wonder. Any thoughts?

Then we would find a different rating system to primarily argue over… lol

lmao!! then we would do as pmrlcomm predits

we’d be stuck in an infinite time continuem where Princeton is always #1

^yikes, that would SUCK lol heehee

Probably use the old rankings…

Schools would probably stop being so selective and more people would be admitted.

^lol, if only.

well, schools would stop worrying about their rankings more and stuff like yield protection would disappear!

There are lots of other journals that publish College Rankings. There wouldn’t be any real shift except the Ivies losing a lot of prestige. I’d say most people would take the Shiang-Jing-Tao Rankings as the main ranking leader. Right now they are considered the #2 most credible ranking system after USNEWS, the only diff. mainly being that they rank all colleges in the world, and have the ivies as being a crapload less prestigious. I believe Rutgers is higher ranked than Dartmouth and Brown in that, and Harvard and Yale pwn Princeton.

Don’t think that USNEWS is the only college ranking system. USNEWS going away would have little effect on admissions, because there is still the NYT, WSJ, Shiangjingtao Rankings, etc.

Somebody else would do another ranking system. Or our attention would shift to a different existing one. US News is nothing special.

Well, one thing that would most certainly happen is that colleges would put less emphasis on test scores and high school gpa’s because they wouldn’t be pandering to US News’ ranking system…

^^ definitely agree with that haha although seriously i’m wondering how much of what they say can really be trusted sometimes…i feel like that is the kind of business were a lot of back door politics goes on

It’s Jiao Tong, not Jing-Tong.

Which is precisely why Jiao Tong lacks credibility. Let’s be honest. How many students are really going to turn down Dartmouth or Brown for Rutgers?

The major weakness of Jiao Tong is that it is fixated on research, yet research is not the only thing that a university does, or should do. Furthermore, the emphasis on research is primarily on natural science research, yet research is performed on other fields besides the natural sciences. So, sure, those schools who produce a tremendous number of natural science research publications do very well, but what about those who choose to emphasize the humanities or social science research, or who don’t even emphasize research at all (i.e. the LAC’s)?
