What would have improved your SSAT Performance?

I would like to know what you think would have increased your SSAT score. In hindsight, what do you know now that if you had known earlier would change how you prepared for or faced the SSAT test?

Personally, I prepared myself well for the SSAT. I bought two prep books with my own money, made index cards for the vocab, and did 4 practice tests proctored by my dad at the local library. I scored well, and what I missed I’m not mad that I missed (for example, no, “that was a stupid mistake that I shouldn’t have made” thoughts later)

I think a tutor would have been the wrong fit for me as I do well when I am driven-and I certainly was driven throughout this whole process.

I don’t really have any regrets because I scored what I wanted to, and the scores reflected my abilities. However, I should have probably studied vocab words more and gotten more familiar with analogies - just to be more comfortable.

@dramaswimmer

Thanks. Which two prep books did you use? Did you like one over the other?

My only tip: Don’t drink coffee before you take the SSAT.
I learned that the hard way, ahaha.

But as dramaswimmer said, I did a bunch of flash cards and practice tests.
And I’m pretty happy with my score. =]

I’m pretty disappointed with my score. I feel like a bit more preparation would’ve helped me. Math - 78, Reading - 78, Verbal - 99. I’m really surprised with my reading score… But oh well, 94% overall certainly isn’t bad.

I used Kaplan and Princeton Review, and I found them equally helpful. I liked referring back and forth between the different texts.

Probably studying the verbal better. Not a native speaker so I didn’t know all the words, I skipped like 7 questions. Not unhappy with the results though(V: 91%) I thought I’d be getting something in the 60’s, 70’s max.

i would have learned more ssat vocab… and like, do better for reading comp. but its hard to practice reading comprehension.

Here is a summary of responses so far. Anybody else want to add more on what, in hindsight, they should have done to perform better on SSAT:

DOs
Study vocab words more
Get more familiar with analogies
Do better preparation for reading comprehension
Use flash cards and practice tests

DON’Ts
Don’t drink coffee before you take the SSAT

Don’t drink water either (Your gonna need the toilet during the test, or maybe that’s just my small bladder.) :)

Read through the test taking hints in Test Prep books. The math hints contained in the answers to the Kaplan math practice tests were particularly helpful, as were general hints for analogies and reading comprehension in both Kaplan and Princeton.
