I need some advice please. Here is my situation:

I attend a local private school. I love everything about it esp the academic advising and all the individual opportunities I get (already doing my own research first year). There is just so much I love about the school.

However, since it is a small private school the price is crazy high! I did debate in high school and got recruited to continue debate in college. I got a scholarship for 40%, and I couldn’t turn that down. The problem is though, I really hate debate. Well not hate I just don’t enjoy it or think I’m good at it. I could honestly say that if I didn’t get that scholarship there would be NO WAY I would do debate.

I feel guilty for putting on this act, making it seem like I actually enjoy debate when I’m only in it for the money. Do you think this is a good or bad thing? Should I try to stay on the team or quit? Any general advice would help.

You should stay on the team assuming you like everything else about the school. There are aspects of my school that I don’t like but I’m forced to do (kind of like real life), but the pros of my college far outweigh the cons.

Do it for the money. It’s like having a job. You’re working to get paid and 40% is pretty good. Stay put, suck it up, and enjoy what the rest of your college has to offer.

Life is going to have plenty of things you’re going to have to put up with.

I seriously HATE THIS!!! Like I feel like I know what it means to do something you absolutely hate for a living. Like just ridiculous. I’m so angry. I don’t want to be here at all.

I LOVE everything else about this college, but idk if I can take this debate stuff anymore…

You are practically telling me either suck it up and get use to hating my college life (and life in general) or just completely drop out of college and join the national guard.

How much is your debate scholarship? If you choose not to do debate, where else can you find the money to replace the scholarship?

–parents?

–loans?

–departmental scholarships?

–work? (on campus jobs, off campus jobs, work during vacation, tutoring etc?)

The trade-offs are up to you. If it will make you feel better, figure out how much your scholarship is worth per hour (divide scholarship amount by the hours you put in to debate practice/tournaments) and see if that makes you feel better about it.

Most jobs in the real world are not full-time fascinating, wonderful experiences. That’s why it is called work, instead of play. There are always parts of work that you will like, and parts that you will like less. The trade-off for work is pay.

Could you find work you would like better than debate? And would it meet your financial needs?

You are practically telling me either suck it up and get use to hating my college life (and life in general) or just completely drop out of college and join the national guard."

It wasn’t rude, it was you being overly sensitive. You asked your options and I offered one. You probably should have at least googled how the NG works prior to being so dismissive. No one said, or even implied, dropping out of college. The NG is a fantastic way of easing your financial burden while getting your degree and adding to your resume, as well as many other intangible benefits. Don’t ask for options if you don’t want to hear them.
