I’d like to get rid of a guest room queen mattress and box spring. We purchased 9 years ago for $400 and the only usage was when my DS took it to college for 4 months. Other than that, hardly anything.
It’s still in good condition, but it’s not top of the line. I think $75 might get it out the door quickly, but wonder if people would pay more.
I think I’d be happy if I got $75. I wouldn’t be comfortable buying a used mattress and I would advise my kids to not buy a used mattress. I’d be afraid of bedbugs.
Used mattresses do not sell at any price in our large neighborhood “for sale” group. That would be something that would need to be listed for free to have someone pick it up.
Ok, thanks everyone. So, it’s free to a good home! I’m listing it on our neighborhood Facebook page. People do know me, so I’m pretty sure they would be comfortable that there are no bedbugs.
I once sold a used mattress. It was around the time of a natural disaster (Hurricane Sandy, maybe) and I listed it as free but donation to disaster relief happily accepted. The buyer gave me $75 which I promptly donated. A win/win.
But agree, would not expect to actually sell it. I think bedbugs are a bigger issue now than back then.
One of my kids sold a two year old mattress and bed frame to one of his college friends for $100. @conmama I would ask if any of your friends are interested in it. Maybe one of them has a kid who is setting up an apartment or something. I think you could sell it…but really…only to someone you know well.
Never heard that it is illegal to sell a used mattress! There are some restrictions on what one can or cannot do, but illegal outright? Of course, I do not practice federal or every state used mattress resale law…
Someone who knows you or of you might give you $50-q100 forvthe set gladly. Or trusts your place as a source.
I wouldn’t take a free mattress or upholstered item from anyone I don’t know. But if I know andvtrust the source, I would buy if I needed one. Right now I’d happily pay $50-$75 for a decent quality used mattress from a trusted used source as all of my mattresses are wrecked. Kids all gone and they busted their mattresses. I’m selling the house so they are for show and guests. I just sat on one and they are not sleep quality for anyone except for my kids!
Yes, there are restrictions on commercial sellers - a mattress cannot be sold as new if it does not meet certain criteria, and a used one must be labeled as such and typically certified clean and free of bedbugs. Never heard of restrictions on private parties. I doubt anyone would call the authorities to to investigate OP’s “used mattress for sale” Craigslist ad.
Freecycle it. When I sold a couple of nice bedroom groups a few years ago when we downsized, I threw in the mattress sets for free because the buyers wanted them. They were high quality and in excellent condition, but I wouldn’t charge someone for a used mattress.
My D was downsizing (lol, she was moving from a 2 bed to a studio) and needed to get rid of her twin bed that she had since college. It was a nice twin bed and had a cover and feather bed on it. It was only slept on for 2 years by my 100 pound girl and was in good shape, no bugs and no stains.
She had a terrible time getting rid of it. No place around her would accept it for donation. She listed it on Facebook marketplace but that didn’t get any traction either. Our back up plan was that her boyfriend at the time had access to a dumpster and he would take it. At the last minute after she had been listing it for a month, a person finally took it. They needed a mattress for their daughter. So it worked out in the end but disposing of a used mattress was harder than we initially thought.
@deb922 , did she just give it away for free? We are getting rid of it to put DS’s much newer and better mattress in the room. He’s getting a new one when he moves. We will have a uhaul to bring his mattress over and then if this one hasn’t been taken, we will have the uhaul to take to the dump. What a hassle beds are.
As I remember, she got $25, $30 for it. Plus we gave them all the bedding and helped put it in the back of their van. But D would have given it away because she was moving the next day
I’ve taken a used mattress from a friend for one of the kids but I wouldn’t take one from a stranger.
Getting rid of them, around here, we have to wrap fully in plastic for trash service to take them. Kind of a pain.
