what would you think about a professor like this

<p>an English professor who had an obsession with programmers. not programming, but the programmers, the people who do it, the culture, etc. My brother had such a professor and told me about him.</p>

<p>i thought this was kind of funny and cute :). i think maybe it was just a case of the professor being fascinated with - and valuing - something foreign to him. because liking foreign things is a really exciting experience. there are lots of cultures that are foreign to us, but not many of them intrigue us in a way that makes us want to share the intrigue with others, or in a way that makes us convinced of their preciousness. so when you find one that does - like the programming culture - then it is a big deal.</p>

<p>Something like that seems to be true for most professors, actually. An obsession with something and a desire to share it with other people are practically prerequisites for a research + teaching career.</p>
