Sex. My parents were staunch Catholics, and super repressed as far as any discussion of sex or puberty or anything involving natural processes was concerned.
Lots of early memories when mom would discourage my questions, but the funniest one was when I was the only girl in eighth grade who wasn’t allowed to see “The Movie.” I stayed in the principal’s office when the other girls learned about their periods. And this was a Catholic school, for crying out loud! Weird that my older sister went to the movie.
A couple of years later, I found a letter that my mother wrote to our (also Catholic) high school complaining that the school musical (“Mame”) was too sexual. She said that “My husband and I have a plan to introduce these subjects to our daughters in out own time.” Except, hahahaha! That never happened.
Instead, I learned about sex and periods and everything, on the streets, where it apparently belonged, in a very twisted manner, starting in THIRD grade.
When my daughter was growing up, my mother started offering advice about “keeping her innocent.” I laughed, and our kids had a much more healthy approach to the whole thing.
Oddly, she never controlled my haircuts, my makeup or my outfits. She even sewed me a pair of hotpants, and knit me a halter top.
Parents. Gotta love 'em.
