Made a new recipe tonight–and YIKES-- I just have to stop sneaking bites of the leftovers.
SO Delicious! BLT pasta.
bacon, cherry tomatoes, pasta, arugula, parmesan, salt and pepper.
I will add some hot red pepper flakes next time. A+++
Anyone around that knows how to cook Crabs (like blue crabs)?
We’re down at our beach house and figured we’d try it - MIL used to do it and guess what, we never paid attention to how it’s done! How many do we need to feed 4?
I’m thinking a dozen, and reading the Old Bay package, it looks like we just steam them for 20-30 min or so…any other tips?
20-30 mins sounds too long to me. I’m no crab expert but I don’t cook my lobsters that long and they are bigger. How long to cook them will depend on size. I’d ask the experts - the people selling them to you.
Enjoy the beach house and the crab dinner!
There are few things in the world as delicious to me as fresh crabs. I think a dozen for 4 people is a nice snack but not enough to fill up on. They take a while to eat so they’re a nice social activity; but by the time I’ve picked and eaten three, I’m ready for a “real” dinner.
15-20 minutes sounds right if they are #1s, maybe a bit longer if they’re jumbos. Basically steam until they are bright red (or orange). I’d use beer and vinegar in the bottom of the steaming pot and sprinkle the Old Bay on after about 7-8 minutes. Wear shoes (not sandals or flip flops) when transferring the live crabs into the pot. I have rarely made them (or been in the kitchen when someone else was) without one crab escaping and scampering away. Good luck and enjoy!
Here’s a good explanation that sounds like LuckyCharms’ method.

No idea. We don’t have blue crabs, just Stone crabs.
They were delicious! We had MIL’s old steamer pot, so threw them in there with some Old Bay, for about 25 min. Made some lemon butter and we were good to go! Yummmmmmm
Anyone have a good recipe for Ranger cookies? The ones with oatmeal and coconut, often pecans, and usually rice krispies or corn flakes? I’ve tried a couple that are tasty, but the texture is too brittle and crumbly.
I’m looking for a no-bake breakfast skillet recipe. Looking to jazz up our brunches at the cottage this holiday weekend but I don’t have access to an oven, just stovetop.
I found a no-bake skillet frittata recipe I’ll try.
I’d also like to do some type of skillet slightly sweet item - like a skillet apple pancake or something. Or a cheesy strata or something. But has to be no bake.
Needs to be vegetarian.
I’m known for my great lake brunches - I want to step up the game a bit!
A have tried this new (new to me) bread recipe twice now and I have to say - it’s a keeper!! It literally takes just a few minutes to stir everything. Then you let it rise in the bowl for 30 min and then you bake it for 50-60 min. Super simple and no kneading. There is a video of a very young boy making it which tells you just how simple it is. this is the website where I learned about the bread: https://heavenlyhomemakers.com/whole-wheat-stir-and-pour-sandwich-bread-yes-it-works
@bookreader thanks I pinned that recipe! Did you add the optional ingredients? (cream, egg)
@abasket Consider a Spanish Tortilla recipe (eggs and potatoes but you can add more stuff although it won’t be traditional). Some recipes tell you to put it in the oven but many don’t and I don’t cook mine in the oven. Here’s one “no oven” recipe version.

Or make a big batch of scrambled eggs as well as some sauteed peppers, onions or any other veggies and put out with tortillas, black beens, salsa, cheeses, sour cream, etc. and folks can make their own breakfast burritos/tacos. You can even add sausage or bacon for the non-vegetarians.
@abasket - psst… avocado toast! I make my version of this millennial delicacy with a Kodiak waffle topped with scrambled eggs, sliced avocado, and some shredded cheese.
You guys are creative! - thanks! We will be doing mexican one night for dinner with all the fixings but I’ll keep that idea for another brunch! Avocado toast is always a win!
Making Pesto and canning/ pickling green beans and cucumbers.
Peach cobbler. Yum, yum and YUM.
@oregon101 , I didn’t have your recipe but made a BLT pasta like you talked about . It was so good that we used the leftover pasta to make another batch for breakfast (with a fried egg on top!). I have a new favorite fast supper dish. Thank you for posting!
Tonight’s dinner was lobsters and corn on the cob - what an amazing combo!
I’ve recently discovered black cocoa and am having fun trying it in various recipes (but it is messy!). Have also been making different kinds of shortbread cookies from the Sister Pie cookbook - very yummy.
I have an orange almond cake in the oven right now. Smells unbelievable. Hopefully it tastes as good as it smells.
