Whatcha Cooking? - Comfort Food Edition

It’s a Sunday sauce kind of day here. Heavy snow. I’m using country ribs, spicy sausage, and short ribs. What do others like to use for meat?

Is the concept of “Sunday Sauce” a tomato based sauce? Not always served over pasta??

Yes tomato based. We always serve over pasta but we aren’t Italian so maybe they don’t?

Two weeks (?) ago I did beef short ribs in a “Sunday sauce” on Sunday - i would def repeat that!

But I’m also a fan of Italian sausage (I have to go mild for the whimpy husband) in a red sauce.

If you aren’t up for a stew-type dish, you could use the eye of round for a stir fry. You need to cut the meat across the grain. I’d use red/green peppers, onions, mushrooms, broccoli, etc.

What?!!! The Lions are playing today! Shouldn’t you be making football food? Beef tacos with guac and salsa and (much) cheese and Fritos and dips and any other atrocious artery-clogging food you can find.

Otherwise, stroganoff.

Speaking of Michigan–I just heard someone on Christopher Kimball’s Milk Street Radio talking about Detroit pizza. I lived in Ann Arbor/Detroit area for a number of years (it was a while ago) and I never heard of Detroit pizza. Apparently it’s pizza with Wisconsin cheese instead of mozzarella and the tomato sauce goes on after the pizza is cooked?? Has anyone ever made it?

No, the only Detroit pizza is Buddy’s. But THE pizza is Ann Arbor’s own, Domino’s.

LOL, there is a “Detroit Style” pizza but to be honest I grew up in Michigan and NEVER heard of that - now, Little Caesar’s would be known!

I believe Detroit Style is not quite deep dish but a rectangle pizza with thicker crust - and no real edge crust.

I had family in the Detroit area years ago, and I remember being up there and having Detroit-style pizza a couple of times. I mostly remember that it was cooked in a square or rectangular shape (a la Buddy’s) and had a thick crust. I don’t remember the specifics of the cheese type or the sauce placement, but it was pretty good.

I did the beef stroganoff “my way” - sautéed onions, mushrooms, a handful of grape tomatoes that needed to be used - and did it in the instant pot serviced over hand smashed potatoes and fresh green beans . Delish.

I’ve made very similar from an old Bon Appetite recipe that included prosciutto - but we often just leave it out. It’s a family (minus husband) favorite!

I’ve made marry me chicken and while my husband liked it I’m sure he’d prefer marry me chickpeas.
I’ve got a lb of ground turkey in my refrigerator that I need to use. What would you make?

This is my favorite chili. I double the meat and usually make it spicier. Or serve it with Trader Joe’s Elote Corn Chips. Chili’s all about the toppings, right?

Turkey tacos, make meatballs for Italian Wedding Soup or use the meatballs in a bowl type of dish.

Turkey lettuce wraps with Asian spices and sauces, shiitakes, water chestnuts, scallions etc.

I vote for lettuce wraps, but stir fry is good, too.

Lots of great ideas. I’m going to look what ingredients I have on hand. We do ground turkey or ground chicken tacos and bowls almost weekly. We already had cauliflower tacos this week so I didn’t want to go the taco route. @abasket youre not the only one with a husband with somewhat picky tastes. No mushrooms, no oyster or fish sauce.
