Whatcha Doing/Cooking/Watching/Buying This Weekend? Oct 24-26

No baseball fans here? I’m watching the World Series tonight. I’ll record it tomorrow but will have to watch it later as my daughter and I are going to see Lord Huron tomorrow night.

Saturday, running around my neighborhood green(farmers’)market and a shredding-for-all event to which I may also bring an ancient tv and some old phones to be crushed. My good friend, who spends a considerable amount of time every year in Verona, Italy is leaving on Sunday night. Hopefully I will see her one last time. Sunday I am renting a car to attend a memorial service in southern NJ. Lots and lots of driving but that’s ok.

ETA: My good friend who moved to Philadelphia is up for a visit after the memorial. Yay!

We closed down the cabin yesterday and flew from Boston back to Phoenix today. Will be spending the weekend getting the house and patios back in order, grocery shopping, and cleaning. Next weekend should be more relaxing.

Most of my weekends are uneventful and I work a lot. This weekend, for Friday night, all of Saturday, and likely Sunday night, I will be working. It is “hell week” so to speak as a college consultant with looming early deadlines. However, I have one very fun thing to look forward to on Sunday. I’m going with one daughter to see other daughter’s major show, one she was obsessed with as a child, and her favorite, so this has been a dream to be in. Then, during the week, in the midst of heavy work, I am going out one night to see a show that my son-in-law directed, meeting up with his parents coming from out of state. So, that’s two things!

Playing 9 holes of golf with friends early afternoon. I expect college football will be on TV tonight.

Sunday we have a celebratory dinner at a nearby French bistro.

Tues. night we’re heading to the Village to see an Off-Broadway play with friends.

Today I will finish the last workout of my monthly Tempo challenge. Tomorrow, we will take my mother out for her 87th birthday. She never fails to put us to work when we get there, so I’m sure we’ll be moving patio furniture and winterizing her garden. I will spend the night, as I have jury duty the next day, and she lives an hour closer to the courthouse than I do. I’d have to leave my house before 6:00 a.m. to ensure an 8:00 a.m. arrival due to distance and traffic.

We’re finishing a family project this weekend. H and I grow peppers and we’ve been making hot pepper jams with/without fruit. We picked the last of the peppers this week and now we’re processing the last batches. We’ve been preparing them in a commercial kitchen. Son-in-law’s Dad owns a small general store/cafe so we’ve got access to the kitchen. Plus, he’s selling them in the store. So far, we’ve received great reviews from buyers.

we made it hiking! H skipped his workout - it was legs -so we could leave earlier. (I still ran 7 miles and did abs and a few pull-ups beforehand.) I’m glad we left earlier. We got there around 11 and while parking wasn’t bad, it was crowded. Coming down you could tell it was a whole lot more crowded and by the time we got back 2 hours later, they had already closed the main lot for parking. It was a picture perfect day and leaves are probably close to peak. It’s been so dry though. Everything seems muted.

And then I think we had a first - we ate lunch in a hole in the wall convenience store and liked it. Not a sheetz or Wawa or a nice gas station. One of those with a sketchy counter. But we were hungry and it was the only option. It wasn’t bad, but I was also pretty tired and hungry.

A picture of “you could see for miles!”. Very nice.

After a long hike most any meal is delicious!

I just saw this thread, halfway through the weekend. Glad you guys are out and about! D24 came into town on Friday evening, and we went out to a Latin American restaurant. We ate on the patio and there was upbeat music. The weather in GA is amazing right now. Then, today, we had an early lunch at an Italian sandwich place. I bought some lemon pepper pasta to take home (this variety is a kind of Italian-Atlanta hybrid). D24 and I went to a musical at her school this afternoon. It’s great to see them doing well since there were some dicey Covid years. In about half an hour, we’re heading out for a neighborhood ghost tour. This is my very favorite kind of weird activity. I’ve only been on one other ghost tour in my life (New Orleans), so I’m looking forward to it!

I am super bored this weekend. After being furloughed for three weeks, I’ve done All The Things that need doing around the house. I’ve run all the errands, cleaned out all the closets, taken all the donations etc etc. So bored. This weekend my husband is off camping (even though our boys are done with Scouts, he’s still an Assistant Scoutmaster and this weekend they are doing his favorite campout of the year) so I’m on my own today and half of tomorrow.

Today’s excitement was: (1) three loads of laundry; (2) scrubbed the shower; (3) actually put away the laundry; (4) got flu and covid vaccines; (5) watched a lot of college football even though my kid’s school wasn’t playing this week; (6) made some lentils with a made up recipe that didn’t suck; (7) started thinking generally about a short family vacation to Montreal in December; (8) did some general research for random Christmas gifts; (9) researched some off campus apartments for my college freshman who will want to move off campus next year.

For obvious reasons (my husband and I are both furloughed, so no paychecks) this isn’t a great time to be spending money. But boy, when I’m bored that’s usually what I like to do. It’s been a conscientious effort to not just go vaguely amazon crazy.

The furlough sucks. It may not be a lot of fun stuff but you kept busy today. Amazing how much we miss our routine when it is interrupted!

In the grand scheme of things, we’ll be fine. We’ve got a good savings cushion so we’re not in as rough shape as some folks. But my routine has gone out the window. Normally I set my alarm for 5:30, and I can’t sleep past 6:30 even on weekends, because I’ve been getting up at 5:30 for 20+ years. Well, I haven’t set the alarm for three weeks and, for the first time, I have no kids at home so no need to get up to make breakfast or pack lunch. I seriously haven’t had more than one week where I had no alarm (or no baby) in 22 years. And now I’m sleeping later and staying up later. When this ends and I go back to work the first few days are going to be painful to wake up.

We’re on our 40th anniversary road trip. Drove this morning from San Diego to Ojai, where we had lunch at the Ojai Valley Inn. Inn? Hah! Huge beautiful golf resort with extensive lovely landscaped grounds. They need golf carts to get around. Then on to Solvang, where we picked up Danish pastries for breakfast tomorrow. On to our motel in San Simeon, and dinner in a charming French wine restaurant in Cambria. Tomorrow we are doing the Grand Rooms tour at the Hearst Castle, then up to Carmel for Sunday brunch, then the 17 mile drive. Monday (actual anniversary) is the Monterey Bay Aquarium and a picnic lunch in Point Lobos, then down to Santa Barbara for dinner. Tuesday we head back home, likely stopping for lunch in Laguna Beach.

Not cooking anything!

So not our usual weekend.

One of my favorite moments was when I was chatting with the nice elderly man staffing the Solvang visitors center. I mentioned our anniversary, and he turned around and grabbed this button for us:

Happy Anniversary @Marilyn ! I love that part of California - perfect for a road trip.

I work on Saturdays so my weekends are Sunday-Monday. We needed to do a fall yard clean up at our beach house. Dh came down Friday night and got up most of the leaves. I drove down with my elderly parents last night after work. Took a long walk this morning to enjoy the crisp, fall weather. Today we will finish up the yard clean up for now, tho we will need to come back again once the remaining leaves fall.

Tonight my 90 y/o father is making dinner - he loves to cook and is good at it. He is making some sort of pasta with sausage and spinach.

My mom and I will do some shopping tomorrow, probably go out to lunch, then we will head back home late afternoon so I can catch up on some needed chores at home before back to work Tuesday.
