What's a good class rank?

What’s a good class rank in a very competitive high school when looking at schools like NYU, UofMichigan, and Boston University?

Top 10% is good. The higher the better of course.

Admitted Freshman:

Boston University:

 • 57% in top 10th of graduating class
 • 88% in top quarter of graduating class
 • 99% in top half of graduating class

NYU
* 61% in top 10th of graduating class
* 92% in top quarter of graduating class
* 100% in top half of graduating class

UMICH
* 84% in top 10th of graduating class
* 97% in top quarter of graduating class
* 100% in top half of graduating class

There are some other variables that you probably want to also consider:

What MAJOR or school are you applying to?

Are you out of state for U of M?

I would probably say you should be a little higher than top 10% if, for example, you are applying to the college of engineering at U of M (if OOS) or the business or film school at NYU.

I’m looking to major in economics and mathematics (on major) at NYU CAS or an economics major with a mathematics minor at BU or UofMichigan.

Oh and I’m from NY.

I should have also mentioned that your test scores, EC’s, essays, and recs will also directly affect the answer to your original question of just how good your rank needs to be. You might want to post this on the “Chances” forum as well, including your GPA, test scores, and EC’s.
