I am going into the tenth grade and have a 4.0 GPA. I am an aspiring detective and want to know what school to go to to pursue this career choice.

haha i would wait until the beginning of your junior year to start your college search

it is wayyyyyy too early for you… but come back in a year! :)

University of Maryland College Park

The major is called Criminal Justice

Katie, what kind of detective?

You’d probably want to go into criminal law or something like that.

I remember that I wanted to join the FBI and Georgetown was my dream school for the longest time :)

Yeah seriously its way too early. Look for schools with Criminal Justice. Maybe even a Political Science/History major will be nice to have after you leave the detective part in law enforcement.

I wanted to be a LEO when I was your age too, boy do things change. Anyhow, criminal justice is the obvious choice but not necessarily the right one. In order to be a detective you could probably get just about any degree. If you want to go into the FBI you probably need something functional like accounting or even a JD.

There is a new field called “computer forensics” that you may want to check out.

I don’t think it is way too early. I started in 8th grade and the earlier the better. I wouldn’t spend that much time on it though.

Another major to consider… accounting.

The highest recruited major by the FBI is accounting. Follow the money…

I think if you get any degree the starting pay is above 50 grand.

Most likely it’s different in different cities, but it shouldn’t be too tough to rise to a detective position.

If you’re going to be a good detective, you should be able to figure this out yourself. Sorry, couldn’t resist! Best of luck to you.

Good one, Mikey!

John Jay College…part of the City University of New York

Here’s their website: [John Jay College Of Criminal Justice | The City University of New York | Baccalaureate Majors](http://www.jjay.cuny.edu/academics/622.php)

According to their commercials, ITT Technical Institute is great.

You don’t need a degree to become a cop, but it can help. I don’t think that with the way the Unions control police force pay, advancement, etc., that there are very many benefits to having a college degree.

In order to be a detective you may need a degree. You might as well get one, you’ll advance a lot quicker and you can’t usually become a LEO until you’re 21 anyway.
