I’ve started laptop-hunting and have been looking for laptops under 5 lbs, but it’s really difficult to find my desired screen size (15") within that weight. 14" is the minimum I’ll go, but I can’t stand screens smaller than that.

I know weight will be really important since I’ll be lugging my laptop around to most, if not all, my classes. What weight is light enough to allow for easy transport but high enough to warrant a large screen?

If you have any good <5lbs laptop with a 15" screen, please post away! My budget’s under 2k.

15’’ usually weights 5-6 lbs (I cant think of any under 5 lbs)

Thanks everyone! I prefer Mac, but there’s a limited choice for it. I’ve heard good and bad things about Lenovo and I’m so confused about the brand. The Lenovo T420s, however, sounds really good. I’ll check it out.

My daughter got a T420 and maybe it’s my age showing but I can’t fathom lugging the thing around. A netbook sized machine, sure. A MacBook Air, for sure. Anything else…

the 15" macbook pro is kinda big and not as portable as the 13". you think that the 13" is really small but its actually not that small if you compare it side by side. if you have apple store near you, you can go see and compare. if you gonna get the 15", you will have to get a bigger bag. they can look awkward

If you’re that worried about weight, try waiting another week or so for the refresh and then go with a 13" MacBook Air. It has a 1440x900 screen so it shouldn’t feel as constrained as the 13" MBP would… of course the 13" MBP would be a more welcome option if it also did 1440x900 lol.

If weight is a big issue for you, get a laptop with a smaller screen, and then get a larger external monitor for your dorm room. The smaller screen will also usually give you a longer battery life, I’m told.

I am highly considering a Macbook Air if I do go for the 13". Thanks, I’ll check em out at the Apple store and probably stop by a PC store for the heck of it. As gojack said, 1lb is hardly a difference…though 2lb+ would be quite noticeable.

I don’t mind the bigger bag! I carry around large totes anyways. I do mind the extra weight on one shoulder, though. If I used backpacks, I’d just get the 15" Pro, no questions asked.

@marcdvl I’m a huge techie…I like having my laptop with me at all times! I can type/stay organized MUCH better on my computer than through paper. If I could afford it, I’d get a MacBook Air for on-the-go and keep a 17" in my dorm. But I can’t, so I have to strike a balance.
