Whats better?8:30 Am or 2:30 pm

so its registration time at my college and I cant make up my mind about my english class. Whats better 8:30 AM class with a really good professor, or at 2:30 class with a slightly less than average professor?

*reasonably based on rate.my.proffesor (dot com)

If you’ll never make it to class, it doesn’t really matter how good the professor is.

Are you an English major (or have a strong English interest)? The only reason I EVER made it to an 8 AM Latin class was because I needed to understand the material and it was a prereq for my Classics major.

@ eccentricme

If you are not a morning person, don’t take the 8:30 class unless it’s a core or prerequisite course in your major.

It depends.

Pretty much everybody would prefer to be in a 2:30 class rather than an 8:30 class.

That means that in the morning class you’re likely to have a smaller group and therefore more of the professor’s attention (including such things as writing comments on writing assignments before handing them back). On the other hand, if this is a course required for all or almost all freshmen, you’re going to have classmates who couldn’t get into the 2:30 class and really resent being there. If you feel as if you need personal attention in whatever you’re supposed to be learning in this class, the 8:30 might be better for you. That said, as other people have pointed out, getting up in time may be a challenge for you, and if you’re not there you won’t benefit from any of the advantages, so you will need to be honest with yourself about how disciplined you can be.

The 2:30 class is going to be close to capacity. You’ll have a worse teacher and you’ll be getting less personal attention. On the other hand, your classmates won’t be any more resentful than they are in every course that satisfies a requirement. If you’re comfortable that you can do well in the course without much personal attention you might want to let yourself sleep a little later, especially if being up in time for an 8:30 class is going to be a challenge.

Give us some more details on the situation (namely, what time/days your other classes are otherwise as well as the class at hand). I’d hesitate to say 2:30 is obviously the better choice. If you have classes at 9:30 and 10:30 on that particular day, then it might be nice to just group your classes in a block and finish up before noon.

Also, I tend to think that a better professor is more worthwhile than a comfortable schedule.

Best advice given by far. It’s terribly difficult to wake up for such an early class, even if you were “an early person” in HS.

2:30, without a doubt.

Is it really that hard to wake up at 8am if you get to go back to sleep a couple hours later?

I hated waking up in the morning for high school, but believe me, it’s a whole different ball game when you have to wake up at 6:30am and don’t finish until 2:30pm, as opposed to waking up at 8am and finishing up before lunch.

To the OP - I think if you posted your schedule, this debate could be settled more easily.

I would actually take the excellent professor at 8:30… I love sleeping but I love professor I can actually appreciate better.

What’s the point if you are going to be falling a sleep @ 2:30 due to boredom compared to being completely awake at 8:30 due to an interesting lecture?

-coming from a person who had an 8:30, 9 o clock class everyday… I love sleeping but ><

wow im surprised ive gotten so many responses. Another thing that is probably an important factor Im a commuter, so thats another thing.

here is my schedule. All the classes in green are already chosen the ones in red are the ones Im trying to make up my mind with. As you can see Im already waking up at 8:30 on TF but for me thats the only time that class was offer and I have a lot of interest in it.

what my best friend says is that well, Im used to high school schedule, and all, and that I might as well take it at 8:30 be done by early and If i really detest it then dont make the same mistakes on the other semesters.

http://farm4.static.■■■■■■■■■■/3278/2731818491_f2948f4559_o.jpg

so Im slightly leaning towards the 8:30 one but still.
thanks guys =]

Dont be scared by the big block on thursdays its Activity time, for clubs and all*

I went way out of my way in order to get the better professors last semester, taking a 9 AM class every day of the week (organic chem) and making a 9-6 block of class on MW. It was a miserable schedule, but I came out of it with better grades I think because I had better professors for the science classes I had.

I had an 8 AM class first semester, and I had no problem making it on time, but that was largely in part because my roommate also had an 8 AM class on the same days. And also because I had 6 AM morning workouts four days out of the week. An 8:30 class first semester wouldn’t be that bad, but you might not want to take one ever again.

I’d go with the am class; better teacher and you’ll be done with classes every day by lunchtime!

yes i think im about to do it lol, thanks for advice guys.

I’d definitely say take the 8:30. You already have to wake up then for your other class so you will be used to it. I DESPISE classes after lunch, cause I always wanna take a nice nap. You’re schedule is perfect for a commuter if you do the morning class, plus a better teacher sometimes makes all the difference with your GPA and stuff.

thanks. yeah ive been waking up at 6:30 and going to sleep late for the past 4 years so i guess doing the same this year will be ok lol.

There are benefits to the 8:30 (better teacher, probably smaller class). But it doesn’t matter if you’re half-asleep, does it? And if you’re going to be a freshman, don’t kill yourself first semester!

i think you should do am

I vote for the AM class too. Better teacher and you get to end the day sooner.
