What's considered a reasonable fare flying from NY to

Paris
London
or
Scotland

Travel would be right before New Years this year.
Any suggestions on a good time to buy tickets - the prices seem pretty good now.

Travel can be from any NY airport or Newark, NJ works too. Logan adds too much extra travel time so we’re sticking with NY or NJ.

Thanks!!

check Kayak.com or Sidestep.com for fare comparison

That’s a holiday week. The fares range from $325 to $600 for a one-way ticket. How low a fare you get is going to depend a lot on how flexible you are as to dates and times. One of the best days for a cheap fare is Dec. 25.
I like to use [Matrix - ITA Software](http://matrix.itasoftware.com)
to see a huge range of fares. Also, keep in mind that there are still FF deals for 30,000 miles each way on some airlines.

I’m seeing rates between $650 and $730 round trip. They won’t be traveling until just before New Years so unfortunately traveling on Dec 25th won’t work.

Since we’ve never booked tickets for flights to these places I don’t have a sense of what a good or even decent price is. We’ve booked lots of flights in the US so I have a pretty good idea of what prices are like.

One more thing - would you pay the extra $$ and get travel insurance?

I see that Kayak.com has a round trip price of $509 on Iceland Express. That’s an anomaly. I think a good price would be in the range of $6-700 round trip.

In regards to travel insurance-Yep. That is a snow likely time in NY and if the flight was cancelled due to weather, you would not recoup the money or credit for another fare without it. The same is true if hotel reservations require more than 24 hour to cancel.

Anything under $800 RT is a good deal (be sure you are comparing fares with taxes included). As for trip insurance, I think it depends on the severity of the outcome if the trip isn’t taken, i.e. losing much-needed money or having to book an expensive last-minute flight to get somewhere. I have never felt the need to buy it, but I always fly major airlines.
I disagree that you do not recoup the money if the flight is cancelled. I’ve always been offered another flight or refund if a flight is cancelled.
