What's it like at SUNY Cortland?

I just got into SUNY Cortland. I visited the school and it became my first choice, but I still don’t know some key things about it.

 • Can a person who doesn’t fit the “jock” standard be accepted there?
 • What is there to do?
 • Are there parties there?
 • How is the Biology department? Is it good for someone who wants to be either a Veterinarian or Physical Therapist?
 • Are people friendly there?

Thanks for your help. I’d appreciate answers to any of these questions by people who have went to SUNY Cortland.

Bump… i am in the same situation… i just got in as a transfer student. I plan on going but am nervous about the whole " jock" situation… i dont want to be in a school full of jerks in frats… anyone?

I don’t go to Cortland, but my boyfriend goes there and I visit all of the time, so I have a better perspective than none.

Can a person who doesn’t fit the “jock” standard be accepted there?
In a word, absolutely. A lot of the education students don’t fit the jock stereotype at all. My boyfriend is a nerdy guy and he has a ton of friends. They do stuff like play DDR, World of Darkness, video games, and a lot of them are in ACME, which is basically the anime club.

What is there to do?
I’ve noticed Cortland has relatively good alcohol free programming. Today they just had glow in the dark put put, plus there are a lot of recreational facilities if you want to play basketball, badminton, or go swimming. I know I’m not making this sound very exciting, but there usually seems to be stuff to do other than going to parties.

Are there parties there?
Yes. I haven’t been to one myself but I’ve definitely seen people coming back trashed, especially after Cortaca. It seems like there are streams and streams of people going to and from parties on weekends. Unfortunately there is a lot of vandalism resulting from this though and I’ve heard of some pretty horrendous sights in the guys’ bathroom after a weekend.

How is the Biology department? Is it good for someone who wants to be either a Veterinarian or Physical Therapist?
I’m really not sure on that.

Are people friendly there?
Yes, depending on who you meet. I have tons of friends there and nobody has ever been rude to me. The student staff that I’ve met have been very nice, and the RD of Hayes hall is a cool guy too. Overall I would probably be going to Cortland myself in a heartbeat if it offered my major. I have had trouble making friends at the two colleges I’ve gone to and there I really fit in.

Have lived here most of my life and I can vouch for Cortland. My wife got her masters in Health from here. It’s not just a jock school. Big misconception. I am also a off campus student property owner, so if your looking for some real nice housing let me know. My website is [Welcome to Cortlandstudentapartments.com](http://www.cortlandstudentapartments.com). Transfers and juniors and seniors can live off campus. Just make sure you don’t get stuck in a triple on campus. The college loves to do this to students, and you don’t get much of a break.

As a current student at SUNY Cortland I can say that it is not just a jock school. However based on my experience there are a lot of the “stereotypical” jocks. I do know people that aren’t, so as long as you can find a good group of friends you’ll be fine… that’s what I did. I don’t party- went to one, I’ve heard stories about guys trying to hook up with girls who clearly state “i am in a relationship” but they still try to get with her- I assume that’s not uncommon at many different schools…boys will be boys… but the party I went to was very comfortable and just about having fun and not hooking up with strangers. So as long as you find a group of friends who you feel comfortable with you’ll be fine.
SUNY Cortland is also known for it’s gay community and it’s high level of acceptance, and I’ve seen your typical “jock” stick up for gays which I was very impressed with.
So don’t be discouraged by Cortland being considered a “jock school”. In all reality physical education is a common major here so it makes sense to see jocks, but it’s not overwhelming.
The student body tries to hold events that are alcohol free, some are a success, some are not. But there are many opportunities so if you do plan on going here stay updated with events, always read posters and signs, get involved, join groups…and you’ll have a blast. Hope this helps :)
