D got her financial package today from MIT. In the package, there is a letter saying that D is named a McDermott Scholar at MIT, but without any detailed info. What is it? Is it a big deal?

jw, where do you live?

Miller,

we live in Arizona

It’s probably just the name of the scholarship. It doesn’t really mean anything other than the last name of the person who made the big donation that is now being passed on to your daughter was McDermott. Mine’s Strehle. The only thing that makes it different from the “general” scholarship is that they’ll sometimes ask you to send a note to your scholarship donors to let them know about your life, etc. I actually met mine at an event last year, it was pretty cool.

LauraN,

Thanks.

One other interesting point I forgot to mention: if and when she decides to attend and gets access to her student information, she can view her scholarship information as well as biographical information about the donor. There’s a link to a few paragraphs about the person and how the fund was established.

^ That’s pretty neat, putting a face on where that magical scholarship came from. :)
