Whats more realistic?

Just some “fun” thinking to do. I overheard a heated debate between two of my friends. One of which is a Finance major, the other, a MechE major. They were arguing over possible salaries, workload, etc, when I heard something that I couldn’t really resist jumping in over.

Business friend said that it was more realistic for him to jump into investment banking than for my MechE friend to land a job in Petroleum since it’s not Texas. Now, some background. We go to University of Washington, which is by no means a target school along the lines of HYPS, Wharton, etc. And while we don’t have a real PE degree, I figured it was still more realistic to land a job in the oil industry upstream than try to get into IB.

But, anyway, I was just wondering, what do you think is more realistic?
