I applied ea and was wondering what people think my chace is due to the large increase in ea applicants. I know that there will be quite a few deferrals this year.

You test extremely well and certainly fall above the range of admitted applicants. However, students who are above the range numerically are not necessarily guaranteed in to a super-selective school like Chicago.

The “good” and “very good” estimations are what will probably make your ultimate case for the admissions office-- who are you, what kind of student are you, and how do you present yourself? What did you choose to write about, and how did you write about it? Why do you see yourself at this school? A lot of your yes or no rides on these answers.

Probably the most accurate “chance” you can give yourself is to make a list of how many students from your school go to on top schools each year. Though college admissions decisions vary widely from person to person, most colleges take similar numbers of students from the same school year to year, and if the top colleges are considered as a whole, most will skim off a certain number of students from the same high school from year to year. For example, about 30% of my high school attends a “top” college, so a student from my school who is not in the top 10% still stands a very good chance at top schools.

Your high school may be the opposite. If only 5 students go to top schools a year, here’s hoping that you’re one of those few!

I think my essays were pretty interesting. I wrote about jazz and Kurt Vonnegut as major interests of mine. For the main essay, I wrote a weird, though well-written thing about science, atheism, and my general outlook on life. I would never have sent that to another school, but i figured its UofC so…The only essay I’m not very confident about was the “Why Chicago?” one. I wrote a fairly standard, boring essay. In retrospect, I think that writing about how I really want to do something like build a breeder reactor for the Scavenger Hunt would have been a better choice.

My high school is certainly the opposite. I don’t think anyone has gotten into HYP, Stanford, Duke, MIT, etc. in the past four years or so (though we do get some people into Columbia). The only person I know who went to Chicago from my school transferred after he applied. Despite this, this year is quite different. The top 10 students in my grade would have been valedictorian two years ago!

Anyway, thanks for the post, i appreciate the input.
