Not all politicians suck just like not all LEO officers suck. I have good representation currently in the Senate and Congress. I need better at the state and local level and look forward to voting in November for caring, compassionate, intelligent people who are willing to unite and lead. Thankfully, we still have a right to do so but need to ensure that safe and accessible elections remain a right for all citizens, especially during a pandemic.
“privileged middle class posters”
“suburban virtue signalers”
“goodfeelz for those who think they are morally superior beings”
When its wrapped in this kind of rhetoric, yeah, I think it is a problem especially in the context of a long string of posts with similar language and tone.
Keeping with the thread topic which has LONG gone stray…our midwest mid-sized urban city had a mix of peaceful but effective protests over the weekend along with some not so peaceful aggression resulting in damage and looting. Since then there have been several protest efforts more organized, more peaceful, more of a blend of community and officers. I will take all progress.
Anyone hear who disses the media does so as a consumer of media. If not, you can’t speak towards it.
It floors me that some people- including some here on CC - put more faith in their Facebook groups than news outlets in general. Quit lumping all news media together. Have your favs, have the sources you don’t care for - but to play the blame game by putting professionals (yes, they largely are) is simply that - finding your scapegoat for the blame game.
National Review put an article up yesterday discussing the problem with police unions.
Vox put an article up yesterday with eight specific ideas for police reform.
I’ve bookmarked both for reading later.
As a juror, I sat on a case where a black man was accused of assaulting a police officer. No weapon. No physical contact to the officer(s). The accused was asked to sit down on the couch (in his own home) and stay put.
He did. For a bit. Then he stood up and began to object. The police felt threatened and arrested him. Charges were assaulting a police officer.
This was a domestic dispute. Couple separating and one was there to move their stuff out and things got heated (verbally). She called the police.
The language of the law the jurors were given as guidance gave the police wide latitude.
It essentially said if the officer assesses the situation & “feels” sufficiently threatened, it’s assault.
I’d like to see laser focus on the nuts and bolts — what we can do to make the system work so bad cops don’t feel like they can do whatever they want.
Certainly there has been successful reform in some municipalities???
I’d love to read about it. A long nerdy article like that isn’t going to generate many clicks though!
Well my Facebook groups posted photos of the looting at my local Nordstrom Rack store that I couldn’t find in any paper or on TV. The newspeople can’t be everywhere, but people in the community with cell phone cameras can.
So today my plan is to buy gift certificates for a brewery in Ferguson that was damaged by looters (again), and make my first Amazon order of the pandemic - diapers and formula for an organization that will distribute them to moms in areas where the looters have burned the stores where they usually buy such things. Because of the pandemic this organization has requested donations be sent from Amazon rather than having multiple donors bring items there in person.
We have a major March planned this afternoon with Floyd’s family-it should be strong, united, peaceful and diverse.
Why do you need a specific photo of a specific looting to know it’s happening? Is it only “real” if it’s in your neighborhood at your places you know/frequent???
Not my city, not my problem?
I am always happy to provide facts. statistics and context to support my contentions but any such post would be immediately censored.
The narrative that blacks are being disproportionately killed by police officers (many posters have said they are being killed “just for being black”) is ridiculous and dangerous. Just use some common sense if you are unwilling to track down the data. After hearing that the police are “out to get you” and “murder you for being black” for your entire life just how do you think interactions with the police on average are going to go? If I thought someone was going to murder me, you bet I’d resist. With millions of interactions a small number are going to go bad.
I’m sure everyone knows by now that more white suspects are killed by police than black suspects. What percent of killings of police are done by white suspects versus black suspects?
@abasket my post related to your comment that ‘some on CC put more faith in Facebook groups than the news media’. I see TV news and I see photos on Facebook. Both. A photo is a photo. The news photos can’t show everything. The people putting photos on Facebook are more immediate. They get there before the news copters can. And yes, I do want to know if the looters are coming into my area.
I have found our local official police twitter feed to be very useful. They were posting every 30 minutes two nights ago to alert residents which areas to avoid that were seeing looting. Yesterday evening was peaceful but they were alerting residents of issues in nearby communities. Our neighborhood NextDoor page has also been helpful.
@OneMoreToGo2021 - you may want to expand your reading list on the issue. Here’s a good article to start: https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2019/08/study-claims-white-police-no-more-likely-shoot-minorities-draws-fire
As long as folks realize some Twitter and FB photos are fake. Our local news covered that as a story a day or two ago. Photoshoppers have apparently been getting their jollies out of it all too. If you don’t see what you like, create it and pass it on.
I’m surprised I haven’t heard that Covid is spread through Chemtrails.
@momofsenior1 - I have already seen that article and read the study it criticized. And many others. I am not uninformed on this issue.
The police Twitter is a bit slow. I don’t think anyone in my community groups is taking the time to Photoshop videos of the looters. And since several people are often posting the same thing, they’d have to have some sort of Photoshop conspiracy to be faking it.
It’s going to be a very violent summer. Get used to it.
Agreed. Did you see the videos of mobs trying to drag people out of cars? Interracial violence on the streets? 30 round clips suddenly don’t seem like overkill now do they?
Peaceful here. Local leadership matters a lot.
Our local gun shop had long lines the last few days. Hours long.
Peaceful here too. Oodles of us glad we don’t live near the cities.
One of our rental house tenants informed us a couple of days ago that they’ve bought a house and will be moving in July. I’m musing selling the house since it’s an investment. There were three for sale in its neighborhood. One sold in April, two in May. None are for sale now. Can’t help but wonder if it will be the same in July and time to cash in. It’s a typical commute for Baltimore"ish" MD.
Selling rental properties has been on our mind with our change of life (midlife crisis?). We’ve been thinking of reinvesting in a condo on the island of our choice or H would like a liveaboard catamaran. It’s all been musing so far, but with a tenant moving out - seems like a good time to do something.
Come mid June I think we’ll at least talk with a realtor.
I moved out to what I thought then were the hinterlands after the 1992 riots. I guess I didn’t move far out enough. I’ve been dreaming about a home in a nice small town far, far away from all of this.
