i slacked off and failed math freshmen year in highschool so the f remains on my transcript but I took a class to get the minimum classes i needed to do advanced algebra sophmore year. I am very interested in NYU and Syracuse university for majors in business/marketing something along those lines.My family is very average so I need a scholarship. I need my gpa to be at least a 3.7 by the time i graduate to have a chance in my dream colleges, is this possible??im joing the swim team and debate club this year, anything else I should do to get into a good college?and sorry if i posted this in the wrong category

NYU and scholarship should not be used in the same sentence. The chances of you getting any $ from NYU are about the same as being hit by a meteor (the same as for most students - they don’t like to give money away).
You need to have a 3.7 by application time which is BEFORE you graduate, so:
3.7 * 3 = 11.1
11.1 - 2.3 = 8.8
8.8 / 2 = 4.4
No. You can’t get there from here.
Another way to think about it is, if you have four semesters (all of sophomore and junior year) of straight A’s, you would have:
2(2.3) + 4(4.0), all divided by 6 semesters = only a 3.43.
If you could bring your GPA up to a 3.5 and then get your ACT score up in the 30-32 range, you would have a chance at getting into NYU and would (in my opinion) definitely get into Syracuse. Focus on getting great ECs during high school. Find a cool internship and really dive into it, join a club and become president, run for student government, etc.
Don’t join the swim and debate team unless you can do it without jeopardizing your GPA. GPA trumps ECs by a long shot. And practice for your SAT or ACT (try both - some do much better on one than the other.)
At this point, NYU is probably off the table. Not just GPA, but affordability. If you can get your GPA up to a solid B, you will have other, more affordable options.
Many schools don’t look at Freshman year grades all that seriously. Just show that you’ve improved (are you a sophomore now?) and don’t worry about the overall average. I do agree that NYU is probably not a great option for you.
