What's the percentage of college grads that walk?

It seems like most college grads walk at their ceremonies but I want to know the percentage that do. I’m definitely walking when I get my AA next year. I don’t get why people bash on others that don’t want to walk though. If someone wants to walk, that’s great but if they don’t, I don’t care. Some people just don’t like crowds and don’t care about the ceremonies. I can’t wait until graduation day and the day I can transfer to a four year school!!!

Except for the ones in wheelchairs, don’t they all walk?

I don’t know if there’s a specific number you’ll find. I didn’t personally know anyone who didn’t do it. It seems like the people who don’t want to walk are the ones who had a bad college experience and don’t want to spend a day standing around remembering their unpleasant journey. Congrats on your AA and good luck transferring

I don’t get how someone that graduates college can have a “bad” college experience.

People walk and don’t for various reasons. Even those of us in wheelchairs “walk” for graduation

You’re not going to find statistics. I didn’t walk for one of my bachelor degrees because it was at like 8 AM and the department was huge. I didn’t want to sit through it. I did walk with my smaller major.

They’re lonely… Or they don’t like what they studied… Or they had roommate problems… Or they got mediocre grades… Is it that hard to imagine that not everyone is happy??

My husband has no use for pomp and circumstance. He did not walk for his masters degree; he was on the beach enjoying the sunshine :).

It took me almost 10 years just to get my AA. I sure as heck walked! I should get my BA next spring (at 47). Yeah, I’ll be walking. Pomp and circumstance! Love it!

It was easy, believe me.

I didn’t go to graduation (I’m assuming that’s what “walk” means here) from law school mostly because my parents couldn’t go.

My boyfriend had a good experience in college (he met me, so duh) . He’s just not into big celebrations, he thinks they are unnecessary. Plus he didn’t want to put pressure on his parents to travel, they aren’t in good health. It was awkward though because he was the geology’s dean scholar (he had a 4.0 gpa). So a couple of our geology professors tried to pressure him into attending graduation. A couple of my friends didn’t walk too.

I wouldn’t have attended my
HS or college graduations if my parents hadn’t pushed it. Big college, impersonal, and I honestly never doubted that I would get my degree, so did not consider it a big deal. I don’t especially enjoy crowds, either.

@motherofdragons

Your husband had better accompany you if he knows what’s good for him!

I was a little surprised by this because at my college they call everyone’s name one by one. But then again, the average class size is 350 to 400 so it may be different at larger schools. Is that true? Even when my brother graduated from a school with ~1500 kids per grade, their names were called individually at separate/simultaneous ceremonies for each major.

Do some schools really not call out names at all?

Yeah it’s not even a question in his mind that he’d go and support his family however they need to be supported.

On the flip side of it, when he said he didn’t want to go to his I was like “ok, that’s cool. What do you want to do today? Beach? Sounds good to me, let’s go.”

Bad is a strong word. And why be bitter about average grades? It’s totally unimportant to me if I don’t graduate with a 3.5 or better. I care more about my learning than my gpa.

I’d be bitter about average grades because I’ve been an A student all my life and need a 3.4 to stay in my honors program. Some people need high GPAs for medical school, or grad school. For some it’s a point of pride. Some people are just bothered by knowing they could have done better.

A good many of your posts seem to be along the lines of “I don’t understand why people could ever think XX.” Open your imagination a bit and consider other perspectives. It’s really not so much of a stretch to come up with reasons why someone might care about grades (like me) or not like college (also like me).

Really you are in a honors program and you don’t like college? Why are you in college then?

^^Dude. Seriously. Chill.

Because I want a good job?

I did walk when I finished my BS in a fairly non-lucrative field. It was honestly a pain. I didn’t walk when I went back to school for my 2nd degree (nursing). I doubt I will walk when I finish my master’s.

I am chilled. I’m just asking questions.
