What's the real hook for Medill?

Let’s say I finish high school (or at the time of application) have a 3.6-3.65 unweighted GPA, 32 on the ACT, and high 700’s on three SAT II’s (probably Literature, Math II, and U.S. History). I have taken six AP courses (U.S. History, Government, English Literature and Composition, Statistics, Psychology, English Language and Composition) and have scored above a 3 on each one. My extracurriculars include Key Club, newspaper (of which I am editor-in-chief my senior year), intramural basketball, and lacrosse during my freshman and sophomore years. I have also been involved in a tutor program in which I spend an hour a week teaching struggling elementary students how to read.

Pretty much the average, if not below average, NU applicant, right?

How can I achieve that journalism hook for Medill? I have applied for a handful of awards this year, but they have not announced winners as of right now. I plan on attending Indiana University’s High School Journalism Institute this summer, and I am also planning on taking a journalism course for dual credit at a local college my senior year. I have inquired about a internships at a variety of regional newspapers, but they have all either flat-out denied considering high schoolers even after my persistence or have been “very impressed, but nothing is open right now. We’ll let you know if something comes up.”

I am determined. Someone give me hope.

I’d say having something published in a reputable newspaper (not your schools, of course) would be a good hook.

I think you should get some work published. You may want to go to there journalism workshop they have for high school students. It may give you a leg up from everyone else. Good Luck!

How should I approach finding professional outlets to get work published?

Northwestern’s summer workshops are out of the question, though; I am not the one paying, but it makes no sense to drop a few thousand dollars when IU’s program is less than $400 for five days.

Is this the same person? I do agree I would never do the NW journalism class either. IU is very good and would recommend it. I was going to go there, but I may just go to one closer to home. I would have to fly. Going to NW workshop would just increase your chances.

You can start sending some stuff to your local paper. You can ask if you can intern or just work there to find the works.

blah blah blah.

It’s NU… Not NWU… :(

NW is Northwestern.

no… its NU :)
