I am currently at my local community college where I plan to complete all my prerequisite courses to become a mechanical engineer. I currently have over 90 units mostly because I recently changed my major. I plan to finish all my remaining math classes up to differential equations and all physics courses required and then transfer. I know most universities accept only a max of 70 transferable units and when I do transfer since I will have completed almost all my lower division courses I may not reach the required number of units to get my degree after completing all my upper division coursework. My question is if I do end up in that situation and finish all required coursework for my degree but still come up short on units what will happen? Will I be able to take any random classes to complete “x” amount of units and get my degree in Mech. Engineering? Besides losing time/money is there any negative effects to my choice?

You’ll still have a lot of GenEds to complete if you aren’t doing them all at your CC. You still have to meet the GenEd requirements for your transfer institution, whether it be through transfer credit or courses that you take there.

What they would likely have you do to make up the missing credits is declare a minor. You could do a math minor, physics minor, or something else relevant to your engineering. That alone is going to be an additional 15-20 credits.

My general eds are already completed so that cats out of the bag! However I would love getting a minor in math along with my eng degree, appreciate the response very helpful, thanks friend!
